Who Came Here In 1871, Dies Tuesday Funeral of One of County's Best Known Pioneers to Be Held Friday Afternoon August Schuett, who was among the community's earliest settlers, passed away at 4 o'clock Tuesday morning. Death occurred at the home of his son, William Schuett, near Winnetoon. He had been in ill health the past two years, but only a week ago did his condition become critical. Mr. Schuett was past 90. He came here in 1871--66 years ago! In June, 1934, when The News issued its 60th anniversary edition, Mr. Schuett was the earliest settler interviewed. No one else living in the community was here when he came in 1871, though Creighton's mayor, H.F. Saunders, who came in 1872, was a good second in the matter of length of residence here. Funeral services for Mr. Schuett, who can truly be ranked with the real pioneers of Knox county, will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Christ Lutheran church, Bazile Mills. The pastor, the Rev. H. Stegemann, will officiate. When Mr. Schuett and his wife (Bertha Neenow)came here in 1871, the Bruce colony was little more than located. The couple came from north of Norfolk, where three years before they had joined Mrs. Schuett's parents. They came to Nebraska from Wisconsin by covered wagon. Grasshoppers destroyed the crops the first three years they were here with the exception of the time Mr. Schuett kept them from his corn with a smoke smudge. Mr. Schuett had the distinction of doing the first grain threshing ever done here by machine. In the early 70's he brought a rig up from near Pierce and threshed for C. Cheatham, who lived just east of where the Creighton depot now stands. One winter Mr. Schuett hauled 675 bushels of wheat to Yankton with each trip requiring three days. The pay for hauling a load there was $10. In an early day, Mr. Schuett was Creighton precinct assessor, Creighton precinct then, covering an area which now includes several townships. He also was instrumental in helping later settlers secure homesteads. His wife and two of three children preceded Mr. Schuett in death. ...The Creighton News 7 Oct 1937
