The deceased had been a resident of this county for the past 26 years, coming here with his family from St. Paul. He was born near Stockholm, Sweden, July 2, 1858, and upon coming to the United States, located at St. Paul. He was the father of twelve children, nine of whom survive him. They are Mrs. Edgar McCool and Mrs. Leonard Hinkle of Gardena, Calif., Edward, Long Island, N.Y.; Bert and Albert, St. Paul; William, Marshall, August and Otto, all of Miller. When a young man he came to America and located at St. Paul, MInn. In August, the year of 1887, he was united in marriage to Regin Gilbertson, of St. Paul. To this union 12 children were born, nine of whom are still living. In the year of 1910, he moved with his family to Hand county, where he has made his home until the time of his death, which occurred at the Sioux Falls hospital in the early morning hour of the 23rd day of March, 1936, at the age of 77 years, i8 months, 21 days. His wife preceeded him in death eight years ago. He leaves to mourn his loss his nine children two daughters, Mrs. Edgar McCool, and Mrs. Leonard Hinkle, of Gardena, Cal. Seven sons, Edward, of Long Island, N. Y.; Bert and Albert, of St. Paul, Minn. William, Marshall, August and Otto, all of Miller. Several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was a friendly and cheerful person and will be greatly missed by his relatives and friends. August William and Regina Johnson by Otto Johnson and Ramona Ufen August William Johnson was born July 1, 1859 in Stockholm, Sweden. Regina Gilbertson, who was to become his wife, was born in Norway on November 13, 1865. Regina came to America in late 1877 when she was 12 years old. August and Regina were married in 1887 at St. Paul, Minnesota. They established their first home in St. Paul where August worked on the streetcar tracks. Their nine children were all born in St. Paul and were all born at home. The children listed from oldest to youngest were: Anna, born May 15, 1888, married Edgar McCool; Gustave William (Billy), born September 14, 1890, married Grace Yost, died May 9, 1973; Gilbert (Bert), born July 10, 1892, never married, died May 4, 1967; Albert (Al), born May 14, 1894, married Ceil from Mineapolis, Minnesota, died May 17, 1962; Edward (Eddie), born October 14, 1899, married Ethel from New York, died August 27, 1974; Grace, born November 30, 1901, married Leonard Hinkle, died August 27, 1974; Marshall (Marsh), born December 14, 1903, married Alta Kintigh; August (Augie), born February 14, 1906, never married; Otto (Shorty), born December 15, 1908, married Leona Rumelhart Arbogast. Three of these children, Anna, Gustave and Gilbert, came to Hand County earlier than their parents and the rest of the family and stayed with the J.C. McCool family. August brought the rest of the family to Hand County in 1910 where they settled in Hiland Township on the present Joe Kellar farm. Later they moved to the Bridenbaugh Farm in Hiland Township. In 1923, the family moved to Ohio Township east of Tanner Hill near the Edgar McCool (son of J.C. McCool) farms - now the William McCool place. August raised several acres of potatoes each year which he sold to J.W. Johnson's Grocery in Miller for %.25 per bushel. That money went for groceries to feed the family. August also did carpentry work in Hand County. His son, Gustave William, did much of the farming and was instrumental in helping to raise his brothers and sisters. August William Johnson died May 23, 1936. His wife, Regina Gilbertson Johnson died nine years earlier on November 9, 1927. They are both buried in the GAR Cemetery in Miller.
