Mr. Burkey was in his 87th year. He was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, February 27, 1833. When a young man he spent several years in Iowa and other western states. He returned to the east later and on August 16, 1866, married Miss Rose Mattingly, daughter of the late James Mattingly, of this county. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Burkey took up their residence on the estate near Corrigansville where they continued the remainder of their lives. Mrs. Burkey died in 1901. Mr. Burkey is survived by nine children, fifty-one grand children and five great-grandchildren. His children are Jerome J. Burkey, James Burkey and Charles Burkey, all of Cumberland; Mrs. William Helmstetter and Thomas Burkey, residing on the estate near Corrigansville; Mrs. Patrick Finzall and Mrs. John Connelly, Frostburg; Mrs. Joseph Blake and Mrs. Augustine Logsdon, Mt. Savage. He is also survived by three brothers and two sisters, John Burkey, of Illinois; Andrew Burkey of Texas; Paul Burkey of Lorain, Ohio; Mrs. Frank Busha, of Champaign, Illinois, and Mrs. Margaret Sunkel, of Paris, Illinois. Augustine Burkey spent his entire life in agricultural pursuits and was one of Allegany county's most progressive farmers and one of its best citizens. Humble in his practices, simple in his tastes, he was liberal in all transactions, industrious, thrifty and progressive and truly belonged to the old school of Christian gentlemen. His personal kindnesses were matters of daily practice and his charities as numerous as the demands for helping a needy individual or worthy cause. For more than fifty years his commodious and bountifully supplied home was a haven where legions of friends always found the warmest hospitality and from which the wayfaring stranger never passed uncomforted. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning with a requiem mass at St. Patrick's Church at 9 o'clock. Members of the Knights of Columbus, of which Mr. Burkey was a member, will attend the funeral in a body. Mr. Burkey's death is the third death in his family within the past month, and the fifth death since October 1918. Nineteen of his grand-children have been made orphans in the past 16 months."
