Description	:	Augustus was a member of Company C, 15th Regiment Maine Volunteers in the Civil War. He drowned at Pensacola Bay, Florida on March 6, 1863, while on a scouting expedition on the Escambia River. According to records, the 15th began duty in Ships Island, Mississippi, in March, 1862. It moved to Pensacola, Florida, on September 8, 1862, and was there until June of 1863. The 1850 census listed Augustus as living in Letter G Range 2, Aroostook, Maine. It moved to Pensacola, Florida, on September 8, 1862, and was there until June of 1863. The 1850 census listed Augustus as living in Letter G Range 2, Aroostook, Maine. In the home were: Philo Bean (58), Mehitable (57), Elizabeth (23), Isiah (14), and Augustus (8). In 1860, the Beans were living in Maysville, Aroostook County, ME. Augustus was 18 and in the home were Oziah (Isiah) Bean (24), Mehitable (70), Frank (12), and Delmar (8). According to "The Story of the Maine Fifteenth: Being a Brief Narrative of the More Important Events in the History of the Fifteenth Maine Regiment," by Henry Augustus Shorey, pp. 32-33: "But by all odds, most unfortunate and disastrous of the scouting expeditions of that period was that of Mar 6-7. up the Escambia River and across the country to Acadia. The party comprised of 50 men for each the 15th Maine and the 28th Connecticut. Lts. Shorey and Dwinel were in charge of the 15th Maine detachment." The men left Pensacola at 4pm on the 6th in 8 row boats. The boats were steered down the Escambia for about 25 miles under the cover of night. One of the boats got separated from the rest. The next day, the missing boat had not been heard from but no one "entertained apprehension of any serious mishap." Upon reaching the place of disembarkment - "most painful tidings awaited us - intelligence which served to enshroud the entire party in a paull of gloom and of sad bereavement." The missing boat had run aground the night before and when the boat dispatched to its aid arrived and attempted to help her, the men were so eager to reach shore that a scramble ensued in which the relief boat was over-loaded and swamped and all aboard - most of them were encumbered by the weight of all the soldiers equipment - were tipped into the river , compelled to struggle for their life. "The night was dark, the rain descending in torrents, the location unfamiliar and the situation as a whole so unfavorable that despite the "earnest efforts of the survivors, eleven of the party found a watery grave." Eight if those were members of the Fifteenth and 3 of the crew from the naval vessels sent to row the boats. "The unfortunate ones were faithful and exemplary soldiers, most of them young men of the most amiable qualities and with excellent family connections." Augustus Bean belonged to this group. On Augustus's death certificate it stated that he was 20 years old when he died. It listed his father as Philo Bean. His father's occupation was farming. His mother was listed as Mehitable. Cause of death was listed as "drowned in Pensacola Bay, Florida." According the history of the 15th regiment, Augustus' body was recovered after the accident. Mehitable claimed Augustus's pension on June 30, 1863.
