(Gus) Kerlee, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Henry Kerlee, was born at Nevada, MO on October 20, 1881. He worked several years at Pittsburg with his father in railroad grading work before coming to Uniontown. He married Katherine Galegor at Columbus, KS, September 16, 1900. In addition to operating a garage and service station, Mr. Kerlee was an employee at the Kansas Utilities of Fort Scott. On the morning of May 27, 1937, the current of 2300 volts in a "live" wire he picked up resulted in instant death. He had been informed a wire was down near the Griffith Grain Elevator, and went there to repair the break. Glen Griffith, who was not far away, seized a board and succeeded in knocking the wire from his hand, but death had been instantaneous. He was 47 years of age at death. Mr. Kerlee was an uncle of Carme E. and Amel R. Jones of Uniontown." BRONSON PILOT NEWSPAPER May, 28, 1937 Uniontown Man Is Electrocuted Gus Kerlee, 56, Uniontown garage man, was electrocuted yesterday morning about eight o'clock when he came in contact with an electric wire running from the high line to the fair grounds, and carrying 2,300 volts. The strong wind of the night before evidently broke the wire and it was lying on the ground. Whether Mr. Kerlee was unaware of the wire's being alive, or was for some other reason unaware of the danger is not known. Death came instantly. Mr. Kerlee leaves only his wife of his immediate family. Augusten (Augustus) Walter Kerlee was born October 20, 1881, at Nevada, Mo. He was the son of William and Rebecca Kerlee. During his early life he lived with his parents in Crawford and Bourbon counties, Kansas. On September 16, 1900, he was united in marriage to Katherine Alice Galegor, at Pittsburg. He lived virtually his entire life in the state of Kansas, being associated with his father-in-law, G. W. Galegor, for several years in railroad grading work. For 17 years he had lived in Uniontown, operating an auto service station and served as Mayor for two years. For the past 14 years he was in the employ of the Kansas Utilities company. He was a member of the Uniontown Blue Lodge of Masons, and of the Scottish Rite Consistory at Fort Scott. He was a 32nd degree Mason and also a member of the M.W.A. lodge of Uniontown. He was well known in Uniontown vicinity and extremely well liked by everyone. He departed this life May 27th, 1937, at the age of 55 years, 7 months and 7 days, leaving to mourn his passing, the widow, Mrs. Katie Kerlee, two sisters Mrs. Josephine Holt, Hepler, Kansas, and Mrs. Mollie Mead, Westwood, Calif.; and a host of other relatives and friends; two brothers and two sisters having preceded him in death. He was of a pleasant and cheerful disposition, a kind, loving and devoted husband; a real friend and neighbor to all of his acquaintances.
