He was born to Horace and Lorena Hudnall Dec. 17, 1916, on the family farm house near Imperial. As young men, Averill and his twin brother Alfred helped raise their nieces and nephew, Wilma, Eugene and Marie Hudnall. He married Ladene Wheeler in Wauneta on Aug. 19, 1945, and they settled on the Hudnall farm five miles west of Imperial. Three children were born to their marriage. LaDene died in February 2002. Averill and LaDene were farmers and they were among the first irrigators in Chase County. They enjoyed world traveling together. Averill was a member of the Nebraska Wheat Growers and enjoyed traveling over the years with that group, irrigators, and car groups. He was an avid rock hound, and he collected antique cars, coins and arrowheads. He loved to go to auctions and collect antiques and all things imaginable. Telling jokes and stories were special gifts. He delighted in hosting children, telling them stories and history, and giving them small gifts. Averill's creative artistic talent led him to make rock jewelry and rock lamps. He especially enjoyed making western bolos and bolo necklaces. He loved reading, especially westerns, and he enjoyed writing poetry. He was generous to his family and friends and had a great zest for life and learning. He taught his children to love life, read and work hard. He was always looking for fun things to do when the work was done. No one was a stranger to Averill and everyone was his friend. When he moved to Imperial Heights in 2006, he helped organize daily coffee hours and card-playing sessions. He belonged to the Imperial United Methodist Church for many years. Camp meetings held at the family homestead were an important part of his religious life as a young man. He is survived by his children, Colleen and husband Robert McClelland of Beatrice, Bill Hudnall of Westminster, Colo., and Penny and Fred Catlett of Hastings. His grandchildren are Eric and wife Angie McClelland, Julie and husband Jared Jochum, Gina and husband Kevin Dinnan, Renee and husband Jesse Dillon, Ryan Hudnall and Jennie Catlett; and great-grandchildren, Ariel Dinnan, Angeliece and Kyla Dillon. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ladene; both parents; and all of his brothers and sisters. Averill's celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Imperial United Methodist Church. Pastor Kay Alnor will preside. Jennie and Fred Catlett and Bob McClelland will sing. Memorials may be given to the Imperial Public Library, the Imperial United Methodist Church or the Imperial Heights and Manor. Liewer Funeral Home, Imperial.
