McNeer and Maud Killen OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Tuesday, December 19, 1989 McNEER Avery Bryan McNeer, 94, son of Orville and Maud Killen McNeer, was born Aug. 5, 1895, and died Dec. 3, 1989, of a heart attack at the Des Moines General Hospital. He was born on a farm near Milo. He spent three years as a boy in Colorado and Oklahoma. He worked and farmed in Lucas County. He lived in Chariton from 1975 to 1989, and moved to Indianola Good Samaritan Center June 15, 1989. He served in World War I from Sept. 11, 1917 to March 18, 1919. He had been a member of the American Legion for more than 60 years. He was united in marriage to Iva Curtis Dec. 24, 1919. To this union was born one son, Lorraine. His wife preceded him in death Sept. 21, 1981. He was also preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; two sisters, Vila Nolte and Esta Spivey; his adoptive parents, Tommy and Roxie McNeer; and adopted sister, Elsie McNeer; one half sister, Fannie Marrs; and one half brother, Harold Keever. He is survived by his son, Lorraine, and his daughter-in-law, Bertha, of Lucas, and several other relatives. He was converted as a young man in the Norwood United Brethren Church. He became a member of the Baptist Church when he moved to Chariton. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 5, 1989, at 10 a.m. at the Mosher Funeral Home. The service was conducted by the Rev. Paul Smith. Pallbearers were Kenneth McCormick, Darrell Stearns, Ted Edleman, Leroy Foley, Larry Marker and Harold Pennington. Interment was in the Norwood Cemetery.
