Alwilda Dudley, eldest of ten children of James and Ella Dudley, was born on May 15, 1874, near Oak in Nuckolls county (sic), and departed this life at Hastings on Jan. 3, 1959, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 19 days. She was one of Nuckolls County's successful school teachers in the early pioneer days. Alwilda was united in marriage to Phillip C. Mercier at Nelson on Feb. 27, 1895. Eight children were born to this union: Homer of Glendale, Calif.; Dale of Pendleton, Ore., who died in 1957; Nova Moore of Van Nuys, Calif.; Virgil of Hastings, Gordon of Pasco, Wash.; Nadine Pease of Hastings, Cloda, who died in infancy; and Hal of Covina, Calif. There are also ten grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Mercier celebrated their golden wedding on Feb. 27, 1945, at their home in Oak, where they lived their married life with the exception of 17 years spent in Nelson. They had been cared for in the Nelson nursing home the past one and one half years. Mrs. Mercier attended the Baptist church (sic) at Oak when young and became a member of the Presbyterian church (sic) in Nelson when living here. She was a charter member of various organizations at Oak and attended while her health permitted. She will be sadly missed by her husband, Phillip, children and grandchildren, three brothers, Roy Dudley of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; Leonard Dudley of Redfield, So. Dak.; Dorsey Dudley of Geneva; and three sisters, Frances Dudley of Nelson; Verle Moore, Oak; and Nellie McIlheran of Lincoln. The deceased family members are a sister, Ruby, and brothers, Charles and Irvin. The service music was provided by Mrs. H.B. Wehrman, pianist, and a quartet composed of Mrs. Leslie Troudt, Mrs. Henry Warren, John W. Troudt and Joseph Ferebee. The casketbearers were Ralph Aiken (sic), Chester Dudley, J.L. Scroggin, Roy Moore, Mark Moore and Clyde Washington. Burial was made in the Nelson cemetery (sic). The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, January 8, 1959
