According to family records, Azubah (Town) Tucker was born December 4, 1769, the daughter of Ebenezer and Huldah (Wheelock) Town. Her parents were married in Charlton, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Recently, as more records are became available, her actual birth record was found. In the Original Record Book for Warwick, Massachusetts, her birth date is listed as December 3, 1769. It is listed as such in two places in the book. Family papers give the following account: "Grandmother's name was Azulah Town. Her father's name Ebinezah Town. Her mother's name Huldah Wheelock. If I remember rightly her father's mother was a Locke. She had two sisters, Lydia and Hulda; their mother died when they were young and their father went into the Revolutionary army and died there. Grandmother was put to a place where she fared hard. She went to school only 9 days in her life. She learned to read somehow and to reckon in her mind what we call mental arithmetic. Learned to spin and weave, sew and knit and all kinds of housework. She used to bake bread for the men who first came to Calais to chop and clear land. She said she had a oven built that she could bake 1/2 bush. of meal at a time. She rode on an ox sled when she came from Charlton, MA to Calais. She had enough money, her share of her father's wages, to buy 204 acres of land and yoke of oxen." Unknown for sure who wrote this, but most likely it was granddaughter, Mandana White Goodenough. Other than some of the spelling of names the information has been found to be true. Azubah's father was Ebenezer Town and he was killed in the Revolutionary War February 11, 1778. Ebenezer Town's mother was Lydia Locke Town. Huldah and the children are mentioned in the Wheelock Genealogy and Azubah and her sisters are mentioned in Huldah's father's will in 1783. Azubah married Edward Tucker, the son of Jonathan Tucker Jr. and Mary (Hincher) Tucker, in Charlton, Worcester, Massachusetts September 13, 1789, and shortly afterwards they moved to the Calais area of Vermont. Azubah and Edward had thirteen children and of these, nine lived to adulthood. Their oldest son, Joel, was killed in the War of 1812. Azubah outlived Edward and the 1850 census shows her living with her daughter, Lovisa, and son-in-law, Jesse White, in Calais, Vermont. Azubah (Town) Tucker died April 13, 1857 and is buried in Short Cemetery, Calais, Washington County, VT.
