Soon came the mutterings of secession on the part of the disobedient children of the South. the traitorous firing upon Fort Sumpter, the clarion call to arms in every northern state, the strains of martial music in every city, in every village, and in every hamlet; the tramp, tramp, tramp of armies marching to front for freedom and the right. Young Barton's partiotic blood ran rapidly in his veins and his spirit of loyalty stirred him to activity in the interest of his country's welfare: so in May 1864, at the early are of 18, he enlisted in Company H, 45th Iowa Volunteers, and marched away to do service for his country's welfare. This he did manfully ,and well, protecting with his comrades the threatened Union line from Memphis to Nashville, an essential part in the great conflict between the North and the South. After returning to his Iowas home he was united in marriage to Sarah C Hare, November 14, 1867. This union of life and interests continued until Mrs. Barton passed to the Great.... June 17, 1902 Mr. Barton was united in marriage to Sarah Ann Bickford, who today sits in sadness and sorrow. Almost 21 years ago, Mr.Barton moved to Salem and engaged in business, until failing health compelled him to retire a few years ago. After these years of severe affliction, he passed onward to life's great journey, at eleven o'clock Sunday morning, September 3, 1922, at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 1 day. He leaves to mourn his passing, his devoted and faithful wife, three sons - Edwin and Lynn of Salem, Arthur G. of St. Charles, IA, Mrs. Emma Watts of Salem, Mrs. Anna Tyner of New London, IA, and Mrs. Maude McNicholls of Huron South Dakota. Chester and Talbert Trio, have preceded him in death. All these children were by his first union in marriage. He also leaves numerous friends who will long remember his for his honorable, upright Christian manhood. Mr Barton was a true man - he was a Christian man. Uniting with the Congregational church of Salem IA in 1896, he remained in it's fellowship true and loyal to its trusts, true and loyal to his God and the Lord Jesus Christ, his Savior in whose companionship he found comfort, strength and peace. The funeral service, which was largely attended,was held in the Congregational church at 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 5th, conducted by the pastor, Rev.C. Vincent. Burial in Pleasent Hill Cemetery near Mt. Pleasant. ------ We wish to thank our friends and neighbors for their kindness in our bereavement, also for the beautiful floral offerings. Mrs. A.
