Payne Loses His Life in a Fire at Kansas City Smothered To Death On Tuesday morning our people were horrified when a telegram said, "B.W. Payne lost his life last night in a fire." The friends here were stunned and his wife was prostrated at the sad news. Only a few days ago he left here, and he was so jolly and good-natured and in perfect health, and no one even dreamed of his being brought back a corpse so soon. Later telegrams developed the fact that he was not burned, that he was suffocated. Mr. Payne has lived in Cherokee ever since he was a boy, and was loved and respected by everybody, and no man ever lived in our city who had more intimate friends. Last summer he and his wife moved to Joliet, Ill, where he was in the employ of W.A. Laidlaw, but recently they concluded to come back and settle down in Kansas City. His wife came here and Mr. Payne stopped in a rooming house operated by Mrs. Mary M. Tobin at 316 East Twelfth street. Two weeks ago his wife sold their residence property here, and Mr. Payne not liking the terms of sale came down and spent a week and made the sale. Their goods being at Joliet he told his wife to remain here till the goods got to Kansas City when he would send for her and they would go to housekeeping. Then came the fatal fire in which Mr. Payne lost his life, also a lady of Kansas City and another man is not expected to live. We have read from the Kansas City papers also a letter from Walker Strain, city passenger agent for the Memphis Railroad, and we gather the facts as near as we can, although the accounts somewhat conflict. Mr. Strain, whose kindness and untiring energy in the matter, and to whom the relatives here feel very grateful for so many favors, gave the most exact account of the affair. The lower floor was occupied by a furniture store. A man was sleeping in the store when it took fire supposedly from an explosion of gasoline. He gave the alarm and the fire department was soon on hand. The flames crept up to the rooming department and awakened the son of the landlady and when he jumped out of bed he found the floor hot and the room full of smoke. He at one began to awaken the roomers of whom there are about 25. Mr. Payne was in the third story, and the roofs of adjoining two storage houses was even with his window and he could have gotten out on the roof but he seemed dazed. He started down stairs and got to the head of the stairs to the lower floor when he told Tobin that he had a gold watch which was a gift and he would not lose it for anything, also about $175 in money. He was in his night clothes and he said, "I am going back to get my clothes, money and watch." The young man advised him not to do so, but he went and got his money, started out, and it is supposed he tried to get to the back stairs but in the smoke went the wrong way, and went into the bath room where he was found after the fire was extinguished lying on the marble floor. He was not burned but died from suffocation. Mr. Strain, after learning that he had gone back for his watch and money, began a search that afternoon and found the purse lying in the bath room. We did not learn just where the watch was found but it had come in contact with the burned floor and it is supposed to be ruined. Mr. Strain had the body cared for by an undertaker and shipped it home on the night train. Miss Effie Payne, a niece of the departed,** was in Kansas City at the home of her cousin, Mrs. Mamie Breyfogle, and she was notified by Miss Puss Fletcher, and accompanied the remains home. A delegation of friends of the deceased met the train and took the body home to his brother D.A. Payne, where funeral services were held by the Rev. Thos. Pingry and the remains were buried in the Cherokee cemetery. The event cast a gloom over our town, and more than one person was heard to declaim on the uncertainty of life. Mr. Payne leaves a wife, a mother, two brothers and four sisters. All but one of the brothers live in this vicinity.
