Born Barbara Jean Rollings on August 10, 1935, in Olanta, SC to the late Lena Austin Rollings and George Evan Rollings, she was the oldest of 3 siblings. Barbara attended various elementary schools in Orangeburg and Charleston counties. She graduated as Valedictorian from Cope High School in 1953. Eager “to get out of the country,” Barbara moved to Orangeburg to attend nursing school at Orangeburg Hospital. She flourished in nursing school and also graduated as the Valedictorian. After graduating from nursing school, Barbara went to work as a Registered Nurse at Orangeburg Hospital. A born leader, she quickly worked her way into nursing supervisory roles in the hospital. It was at work that she met Joseph Donald Collier, the man who would later become her husband. Barbara was helping take care of Donald’s mother who was a patient in the hospital. On April 26, 1958, Barbara and Donald were married at Bethany Baptist Church in Bolentown, SC. The couple quickly became active in the Orangeburg community. They joined St. Andrews UMC and the Jane Varn Sunday School class. It was in Sunday School that Barbara and Donald made friendships that would last a lifetime. Barbara accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age. She had the pleasure of attending church summer camp led by Grady Wilson, a close associate of Billy Graham. She was reared by faithful Southern Baptist parents. Barbara later joined the United Methodist denomination because she strongly believed families needed to have a united front and attend the same church together. Barbara continued to work in the nursing profession, both at Orangeburg Hospital and for the late James G. Johnson, MD. Her greatest calling, however, was being a mother. In 1964, Barbara and Donald became the proud parents of daughter Jean. In 1967, daughter Carol was born. From that time on, Barbara dedicated her nursing skills to her family as a stay-at-home mother and wife. Barbara was quite a leader at home and in the community. She was well-known as a fantastic cook, gardener, and wizard of numbers. She baked cakes and pies to take to church and family events. Her items were always the first to be eaten. She also baked hundreds of pound cakes to give to Donald’s business associates. She fried the world’s best chicken and made scrumptious pimento cheese. She was a homeroom mother for both daughters’ classes and Treasurer of the Willington Academy PTA. She was President and Treasurer of Hoe’n’Hope Garden Club and won multiple awards in the flower show at the Orangeburg County Fair. She served as the Treasurer of St. Andrews UMC and the Pilot Club of Orangeburg for many years. She also was the President and Treasurer for the Orangeburg Assembly. Barbara was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes and evening gowns, curtains and furnishings for the home, and costumes for her daughters’ sorority. In 1986-1987, Donald embarked on a new adventure in the organization of Orangeburg National Bank. Barbara was a supportive partner in this journey and was not afraid to serve as a sounding board, number cruncher, or whatever else was needed to help make the bank a success. Sadly, in 1992, Donald passed away suddenly. Barbara remained in Orangeburg for several years before moving to Bluffton, SC. She enjoyed her time there, but in 2000, she moved to W. Columbia to be closer to her daughters, grandchildren, and sister. Barbara enjoyed living 2 doors down from her sister and brother-in-law. Barbara’s greatest joy was her 4 grandchildren. She loved going to the beach, the mountains, the farm, and shopping with the children. She was their favorite babysitter. She answered to Grandmother, Grammie, and Mamother. Her eyes lit up with delight whenever her grandchildren came into the room. Every one of the grandchildren requested her fried chicken as a birthday meal at some point in time. Barbara’s memory began to fade after she had open-heart surgery in 2010. She was diagnosed with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in 2016. She was a strong woman who fought losing her memory with grace and humor. In 2016, she moved to Oakleaf Village in Lexington, SC and lived there until her passing. Our family can never thank the staff enough for loving and caring for her like she was their own grandmother. We also thank the Tidewater Hospice staff for their care and compassion in her final weeks. She is survived by her daughters, Jean Wood (Oliver) of Columbia, and Carol Middleton (Jim) of Lexington, grandchildren, Corey Wood of Auburn, AL; Andrew Wood of Columbia, SC; Mary Janice Middleton of Clemson, SC; and Rachel Middleton of Lexington, SC, sister Janice O’Cain (Rev. John) of W. Columbia, brother Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Wayne Rollings (USMC) (Gwen) of St. Augustine, FL, sisters-in-law Mary Summers of Bowman, and Margie Collier of Santee, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and parents. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Dukes Harley Funeral Home Chapel, Orangeburg, SC. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Barbara loved bright colors.
