Skrable, of Elberon, made plans for celebrating the eightieth birthday of her husband’s mother, but the delicate health of the guest of honor prevented her plans before being carried out at that time. This year arrangements were held back, fearing last year’s experience be repeated, but the weather proved propitious and the aged lady in comfortable health, so on Friday afternoon ten of her old friends came to spend the afternoon with her in talking over old times and old friends. Mrs. Frank W. Sell, a daughter, assisted Mrs. E. P. Skrable in serving a delicious three-course luncheon, as follows: fruit cocktail, creamed chicken, perfection salad, parkerhouse rolls, ice cream, cake and coffee. The table decorations had been planned for last yea with the four tall lavender candles representing twenty years each. In the center of the table stood a mirror holding a footed glass bowl filled with purple asters topped with pink that blended with the color of the candles. The favors were pink carnations. Those present at this very happy event beside the honored guest, Mrs. Barbara Skrable, were her sister, Mrs. James Valenta, Mrs. Catherine Kesl, Mrs. Joseph Kucera, Mrs. Frank Novak, Mrs. James Kaloupek, Mrs. Martin Ulch, Mrs. William Mundel, Mrs. John Silhanek, Mrs. George J. Dolezal, and Mrs.Frank Blazek. A cousin, Mrs. Joe Novak, of Clutier, was unable to be present, also Mrs. James Vileta, of Tama. Mrs. Skrable’s life is worthy of note. She was born in Bohemia, October 18, 1848, and when about 16 years old accompanied her aunt, Mrs. Anna Hach, to this country. She was employed in the home of Dr. K. D. Shugart, in Belle Plaine, and in other homes where she was highly esteemed. On Feb. 28, 1863, she was married to John Skrable, and they began farming on the farm south of town now tenanted by Mrs. Anna Kucera and sons. With the coming of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad in 1881 and the town of Elberon, her husband came to Elberon and built the second store building , establishing a grocery, hardware and implement business, where Joe Kesl now has his department store. Mrs. Skrable is the mother of eight children, seven of whom are living, as follows: Mrs. Frank W. Sell, wife of the cashier of the bank at Chelsea; Mrs. Will Benesh, of Alhambra, Cal,; James C., of California; Emil P., who is cashier of the Elberon bank; Jos. M., vice-president of the Elberon bank and president of the Clutier bank; Frank L. a government inspector of meats at Sioux City, and Mrs. W. S. Johnson, of Omaha. On February 28, 1918, Mr. and Mrs. John Skrable celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in the home of their son, Emil P., in a very elaborate and fitting manner, and two years later ended the earthly existence of Mr.Skrable. Since then Mrs. Skrable has had the companionship of her son, Joseph M. in her home. [Traer Star-Clipper, 25 October 1929]
