June 7, 1899; Marion Register Barbara Stewart - Was born in Richland County, Ohio, February 2nd, 1842, where she lived until she was 12 years of age, when she came with her parents to Linn County, Iowa, one-half south of Martelle where she lived until the 28th day of March, 1860 when she was married to Frederick L. Keith, who answered his country's call in the fall of '61 and went to the war leaving her with her parents at Martell. During the war she resided at Martelle and with her sister at Mt. Vernon, Iowa. After the war they moved to the little town of Fairview, Jones County, where they lived seven years, then to Mt. Vernon, where they resided about the same length of time. Then to Marion where she has lived nearly 18 years and where her husband died, February 10, 1893. When she was a child she was christened into the Presbyterian church and was a conscientious member of that church until she moved to Fairview. There being no Presbyterian church there she joined the Christian church and was baptized by Elder Hurd who has since been pastor of the Christian church here at Marion. She had three sisters, she being the youngest of the four. One died when a young woman, one Mrs. Robt. Moore of Cedar County, near Tipton, who died a few years ago at about the same age of herself, another Mrs. Richard Larue, near West Liberty. The oldest of the family still survives at the age of three score and ten. The brothers are all dead. One died in childhood, two gave their lives for their country during the rebellion, and one died in Ohio a few years ago. She was the mother of seven children, two of whom died in early childhood and five of whom, Elmer L. Keith, residence Mt. Vernon; Hattie L. Ross, Marion; Edith E. Gilbert, Marion; Fred W. Keith, Marion; and Frank Keith, Marion are still living, all of whom were permitted to be with her during her last illness. Nor truer or fonder mother ever blessed a family of sons and daughters than she. Ever thoughtful of their welfare, their health and comfort, she scarcely heeded her own. For years she had been afflicted with symptoms of liver and stomach troubles but she was so cheerful and seemed so unlike a sick person that even the best physicians as well as her family were surprised two weeks ago to find her taken suddenly very bad and for more than a week prior to her death her case seemed utterly hopeless. Blood poison took place and the tired worn out system being unable to throw it off she soon succumbed. She suffered intensely for the first few days but during the last few days she seemed mercifully deprived of the consciousness of any pain and quietly slept her life away. She had made many friends during her residence in Marion and there was not a moment during her entire illness that some of them were not at her bedside using their very best endeavors to relieve the pain or assist the family in taking care of her. To the entire family she will be a terrible loss and especially to her two little grand children, Georgie and Bessie Keith whose mother died last July and to whom she had been both mother and grand mother since that time.
