Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 15 Apr 1869 p2: "DIED---In Howard, April 10, Mr. Bela Hammond, aged 75 years. In the death of Mr. Hammond society has lost a rare gem. As a husband, father and citizen, he was almost without a fault ever just, charitable and kind, he gained the respect of all who knew him, uniformly hopeful amid the many changes of his life, he won the hearts of all; and as disease crept upon his mortal frame, and gained a stronger hold with every passing month for the several last years of his life, his patient, humble spirit was truly beautiful. We deeply mourn our loss. Our beloved parent's mortal career is ended, yet we are sustained by the belief that his spirit watches o'er us, and breathes solace to our wounded hearts. His sufferings during the closing years of his life were alleviated by the knowledge Spirit intercourse; his loved ones who passed on before him to Spirit Life, were his comforters, his mind was elevated and spiritualized, a heavenly expression o'erspread his countenance, and he seemed meet for the better land. As we laid that loved form in the cold grave and gazed down into its silent house, we knew that out father was not there, bur had arisen to higher life, where we hope to meet him when we lay aside the form. Pass on loved to higher life, Freed now from mortal care and strife; On Heavenly wings pursue thy way, And mount to everlasting day. Thy mortal form we no longer see, Yet dearest father, may we be They special charge, while here below, Oh teach us how thy joys to know.---S. M."
