Belva was born in Keatley, Saskatchewan, Canada on December 19, 1912. She was the fourth child of Floyd and Winnifred Harris. Her parents, two brothers, Alvin and Amos Harris, two sisters, Leota and Thelma, have preceded her in passing. Belva graduated from Burlington High School May 28, 1931, and attended Bellingham State Normal for years. She was unable to complete her teacher's course of study due to the extreme financial conditions created by the Great Depression, a desire she carried to the end of her days. Belva met her husband to be, Richard "Dick" Poldervart in high school. They were married in Burlington, WA on October 27, 1934. After three years residing in Rockport, WA, where Dick was employed as a logger, they moved to Lyman, WA, to begin life as dairy farmers. Shortly thereafter, they moved to a larger place west of Burlington, where through hard work and frugal management they prospered and enlarged the farming operation. During this time, Belva was busily engaged in having four children and managing the homemaking responsibilities of a growing farm family. In 1955, they sold the dairy and moved to Quincy, WA, where they built and operated Quincy Alfalfa Co. In addition, they began to acquire farmland and Belva took on a private school Christian Kindergarten teaching job at the Quincy Lutheran Church. This gave her part of her lifelong dream of being a teacher and allowing her to work with little children. In the middle '70's, they sold the "alfalfa mill" and became diversified crop farmers. 1988 brought Belva and Dick full retirement from their working life and provided a few years of relief from the stress of the farm and some motorhome travel. Dick passed away in 1992, motivating Belva to move into town and fully engage herself in ceramics, doll making, sewing and entertaining her garden club. Throughout her life, religious affiliation has been a high personal priority. She has been a member of the Avon Methodist Church, the Burlington Lutheran Church, the Quincy Lutheran Church and the Ephrata Lutheran Church. Belva spent may hours reading her Bible, religious books and magazines. For many years, Belva hosted weekly Bible study in her Quincy home. Belva is survived by four children, James and wife, Sandra Poldervart of Quincy, WA, Robert Poldervart and wife, Mary of Auburn, WA, Sylvia and husband, John Ringgold of Punaluu, HI and Shirley Brossit of Kaneohe, HI. In addition, she is survived by eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Family only Graveside Services were held at the Burlington Cemetery Friday, November 6, 2009. Donations may be given in her honor to Quincy Valley Hospital.
