Read More	Monroe News-Star (Monroe, Louisiana) Monday - 22 Nov 1954 pg1 & 2 BEN DOWNING'S RITES HELD IN CHURCH TODAY Many in business and civilian walks of life thronged the First Methodist Church, Monday at 2:30 pm to attend the funeral of Ben Rice Downing, Sr., 56, executive vice-president of the Ouachita National Bank, who died in his sleep early Sunday morning at his home 1600 Island Drive. A sudden attack of heart failure was given as cause of death. It was the second attack of this nature that he had experienced. All last week he had attended to business at the bank in seemingly good health. The funeral service was conducted by Dr. H. L. Johns, pastor, and assisted by Dr. A. M. Serres, now pastor of a New Orleans church and former pastor of the Monroe First Methodist Church. Interment was in Riverside Burial Park where the Peters Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. A native of Arkansas, Mr. Downing had been a resident of Monroe for 37 years during which time he was affiliated with the Ouachita National Bank. He was prominently identified in local civic club work and charity benefits, also as an active leader in Methodist Church work. He was a member of the Rotary Club, member of the board of stewards of the First Methodist Church, member of the board of directors of the Methodist orphanage of Ruston; member of the board of director at Ouachita National Bank, and he had also served on the boards of the Red Cross and Community Chest. Listed among his survivors are his wife; Margaret Sparks Downing of Monroe His mother: Mrs. Ollie Downing of Monroe Two son: Ben Rice Downing, Jr. of Baton Rouge Robert Clayton Downing of Monroe One brother: Billy Downing of Monroe The Ouachita National Bank closed at 1pm Monday out of respect to Mr. Downing.
