Downing, aged 69, well known local man and member of a prominent family, succumbed to a heart stroke downtown at 11:30 o'clock this morning. He had been subject to a weak heart for about six years. The stroke was received as Mr. Downing was playing a game of pool with Paul Cook, at about 27 years of age, at the Wise pool hall, 137 DeSiard street. As Mr. Downing gasped and fell backward, he was caught by A. C. Pitts. Several men who had been watching the game rushed forward and placed Mr. Downing on the pool table, while Charlie Barr ran across the street to summon a doctor from the Ouachita National bank building. An ambulance was summoned and the doctor gave Mr. Downing a hyperdermic as he lay on the ambulance cot in the pool room. The stricken man was then placed in the ambulance and rushed to the emergency room in a hospital, where he expired at once. About five years ago Mr. Downing suffered a stroke which left one leg partially paralyzed. Since that time he walked with the aid of a cane. He was born and reared in St. Louis, Mo., engaging in the lumber business for many years at various points in the south and in 1918 moved to Monroe, erecting the family home at 609 Walnut Street. He retired from business some time ago. The fatally stricken man possessed a wide range of friends, many of whom are to be found in ranks of sportsmen. That Mr. Downing never missed a baseball game involving the Monroe team in the Cotton States League here was a byword with baseball fan. Possessed of inimitable wit and enthusiasm, Mr. Downing was warmly greeted wherever he went in Monroe and West Monroe. His presence at a ball game added to the enjoyment of many fans. He was an honored guest of the local team at all games here. He also was an expert at billiards and derived much pleasure from this pastime. It was stated that he had played a large number of games this morning being in all appearances in his usual health. Last rites for the stricken man had not been arranged early this afternoon. Mr. Downing is survived by his widow, three sons and two sisters. Sons: Bill Downing, assistant cashier of the Ouachita Nation Bank Billy Downing, who is connected with the Frost Lumber company in Shreveport and Texas Ewing Downing of Shreveport. One of the sisters resides in New York City and the other resides in Tucson, Arizona Monroe News-Star - Saturday - 11 July 1931 pg8 Last rites will be conducted for S. M. Downing, 69, at 4 p.m. today at the family residence, 609 Walnut street. Rev. Ernest Duncan Holloway will officiate and burial will be made in Riverview burial park. Subject to a heart attack for about six years, Mr. Downing was fatally stricken yesterday, shortly before noon. He died in a few minutes later at a hospital. Mr. Downing is survived by his widow, three sons, and two sisters. The sons are: Ben Downing, assistant cashier of the Ouachita National bank, Billy Downing, Ewing Downing of Shreveport.
