Four children were born of this union, of whom Mary A., Dempster J., and William A. have preceded him to the better world. Byron B. of Whitten, Iowa, and Mrs. Stephen DeShaw of Hopkinton, survive him. On March 12, 1865 he was again united in marriage to Emily E. L. Jackson, who with one daughter Addie M., now Mrs. Frank Wheeler of Masonville, still survive. One son, Johney M. has passed before. Of his decendants there are twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren living. Soon after his first marriage Mr. Dighton and his wife united with the United Brethren church, and in later years he and his wife united with the Methodist church of that place. The faith which he accepted in early life sustained him till the time of death. Uncle Ben, as he was familiarly called, was one of the early pioneers and suffered all the hardships of pioneer life. He helped to erect the grist mill at Rockville, which was the first to be built in Delaware county, and also helped to build the first frame building that was erected in Hopkinton. In that day the only trading post was in Dubuque. He had hauled many a load of dressed hogs to that town for $1.50 per hundred, and returning brought supplies for the neighbors. His team was a yoke of oxen. He cut and hauled the logs to mill for which was made the lumber with which he built his own house on the homestead which he occupied till the time of his death. Mr. Dighton had been a sufferer from illness for forty years, and for the last twenty years a complication of disease made his suffering intense. Through it all he bore his afflictions with Christian fortitude. The funeral was held Friday forenoon, Rev. J. F. Hindenberger of the M. E. church officiating, and the remains were escorted to their last resting place by a concourse of old neighbors. Manchester Democrat, Manchester, Iowa April 3, 1907 *
