Barnaby was born February 28, 1854, in Clark County, Indiana, died April 18, 1919 at his home, 1919 21st Street, Kearney, Nebraska, at the good old age of 65 years 1 month and 21 days. Mr. Barnaby was one of twelve children, all but one, a brother, having preceded him to the grave. The family moved to Illinois in 1863 and to Missouri in 1869. On March 8, 1887, he was united in marriage to Minnie (Nannie) E. Connell. To this union were born nine children, three of whom preceded the father in death. In 1888 Mr. Barnaby and wife moved to Nebraska, homesteading in Hooker County. There they endured the hardships that were presented to pioneers in the sandhills. The fall of 1905 Mr. Barnaby and family came to Sumner and took up the ownership and management of Central Hotel. While there three of the girls married, leaving Kate and the two boys, Oscar and Archie, at home. Last year the hotel was closed and deceased and family moved to Kearney. Last fall he was stricken with paralysis in the lower limbs but became so that he could walk about some, even making a trip back to Sumner. A month before his death a second stroke came and made him helpless. Mrs. Barnaby, his wife, is naturally a nurse of exceptional qualities; therefore, besides the wifely affections, he had the best of care. The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Episcopal Church, of Sumner, Sunday afternoon, April 20 and of which deceased had been a member for some nine years. The services were in charge of the pastor, Rev. O. C. Morton, assisted by Rev. H. E. Wolcott, pastor of the Baptist Church, and the choir, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Moore, Mrs. A. L. Becker, and W. R. Gemmill, Mrs. Olga Wheeler, pianist. Internment in the I. O. O. F. Cemetery, by the side of two of his children. Undertaker J. H. Yost was called to Kearney at the time of his death having the undertakers care of the body. There are to mourn his loss, the wife, and mother, two sons, and four daughters; Mrs. Gertie Hood, Council Bluffs, Iowa; Mrs. Kate Rowan, Kearney; Mrs. Ola Lorenzan, Pittsburg, Kansas; Mrs. Ollie Spellmeyer, Sumner, two boys, Oscar and Archie, at home with the mother in Kearney, and seven grandchildren, and there is the brother and many friends who mourn with these of the family. The flowers presented were many -- the casket being covered with beautiful flowers. The services were set for 2:30 p.m. and before the arrival of the family, the church was filled with friends who had known the deceased and the family for years. Mr. Hood of Council Bluffs, Iowa, accompanied his wife, Gertie, and Mr. Barnaby's brother's wife and daughter were with the mourners. Mrs. Ollie Spellmeyer and children accompany the mother home Sunday evening. Mr. B. F. Barnaby was a sturdy, independent character, with a hobby of "paying up as you go". His thirteen years in Central Hotel here in Sumner made him well known and well respected by a large number of traveling men that came and went. The running of a hotel in a small town has it ups and downs and no elevator to help the lift. In the last years of his service as Central Hotel manager began to be trials that were wearing; the fact he was thirteen years, with the help of wife and children, in the public business, and the fact that the family is a wholesome, practical bunch, places Mr. Barnaby as one of Sumner's substantial citizens, may not have received his full reward here and deserves of that reward promised the faithful servant.
