Description	:	In his younger days he was quite wild and was the "Chief" of the Modocs. Big Ben was a fine figure of a man with his muscled body, his full flowing black beard and his wide brimmed hat. Big Ben was a fine figure of a man with his muscled body, his full flowing black beard and his wide brimmed hat. He was a sight when he came into town racing his spirited team hitched to a topless buggy! Big Ben crossed the plains to Northern California and worked as a gold miner from 1852 to 1858. In April 1858 he located to Wayne County, Iowa where he took a wife, Sarah Jane Davis, who was born and reared in Indiana, on 30 Sep 1858. In 1862 Ben left her and a small child to enlist in the Union Army. The headstone at Betlehem Cemetery says " G.A.R. Co., F, 34th Iowa InfantryVol., Civil War". He became a 2nd Lt and fought in the battle of Vicksburg, under General Sherman December 27-29, 1862 and the Battle of Arkansas Point. He was discharged on account of a disability 05 Apr 1863 and returned to his family. Big Ben was in a posse that tried to hunt down the Jesse James Gang after a 03 Jun 1871 bank robbery in Corydon, Wayne County, Iowa. Ben was engaged in farming until 1885 when he was elected Sheriff of Wayne County. Ben and Sarah were the parents of 11 children including an infant that died 07 Oct 1867. He was a Democrat and cast his first vote for Franklin Pierce while in California in 1852.
