Jared Is Accidentally Killed Going Through Fence—found Next Day. The saddest event that the editor has been called upon to chronicle for many years occurred last week in the untimely death of Benjamin Tillard Jared, that happy, good natured, big hearted citizen of so many friends and few enemies. The announcement of his death cast a shadow over the entire community which has not yet been removed. The coroner's verdict tells little aside from the bare facts of the case. He did come to his death as stated as a result of the discharge of an automatic shotgun, beyond a doubt purely accidental. Here is the story as nearly as we can relate it: Early Wednesday forenoon he left his store and employed A. W. Benda with one of his cares to take him to Promise City as he wished to transact some business with H. P. Chrisman, cashier of the Farmers State bank, of that place. Before starting he tossed his gun and a few shells into the car as it was a beautiful day and he thought perhaps he might do a little shooting, either coming or going. The trip was made to Promise City without incident. Mr. Chrisman was seen and whether or not Jared paid off a note, which was the purpose of his trip is immaterial. The two men (Jared and Benda) returned to Corydon, reaching town about 11:00 a.m. Mr. Jared instructed Benda to drive straight west of the Rea park to the L. Kimple place and thence to take south to the home of his brothers Omar and Ash who live a half mile south and a quarter mile west of Corydon. But he decided in the course of his way to have Benda let him out at the Cross bridge a mile south of town which was done about 11:00, and then hunt through the woods until noon, saying to Benda "I will hunt through the woods and take dinner with the boys at noon and then get one of them to hunt with me this afternoon." This was the last time he was seen alive and the last words he spoke so far as anyone knows. Benda returned to town in this car, delivered some instructions, which had been given him, to Ed Ewers at the Jared store and then gave the incident no further thought. As stated he had taken his automatic repeating shotgun with him and he is known to have been an excellent shot and very fond of hunting. He traveled in the field of Chas. Thompson probably a quarter of a mile and came to the division fence between the Thompson place and the place of his brothers, Omar and Ash Jared. He walked up directly to the fence, selecting the easiest place to get through, and here he was found the following day late in the evening over twenty-four hours after the accident of his death must have occurred. About noon Thursday after he had been absent a day, Mrs. Jared became uneasy and sent word to her brother, K. L. Hook, and others who began investigation and about 4:00 p.m. K. L. Hook and Omar Jared found the dead body of their brother right where he had met his death at the partition fence. The county attorney was at once notified and he telephoned for the coroner, Mr. Minor Chase of Allerton, and the sheriff with three official witnesses went out. The witnesses were R. F. Kelso, C. W. Boswell and E. E. Poston. An investigation indicated that he had gotten through the fence and was bringing the gun through between the second and third wires, barrel first, and the trigger caught upon the end of a wire where a splice had been made, causing the discharge which resulted probably in instant death. He fell in a crouching position forward against the gun, his pipe fell from his mouth and was found partly smoked right beneath his face, broken in two. He had been here for probably thirty hours when the searching parties reached him but undoubtedly had been cared for by a higher power as he must have died instantly. The remains were tenderly picked up and brought to town where an inquest was held and a verdict given as stated above. Mr. Jared was 46 years old and is survived by a wife and three children. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at the Christian church and the remains were carefully laid away in the Corydon cemetery.
