Pierce was born August 25th, 1846 at Elkhart, Indiana. When a child his parents moved to Floris, Iowa which became the home of his childhood and youth. During the Civil War he served two years, young as he was, in Company B, Second Iowa Cavalry, Union Army, On November 19th, 1869 he was married to Miss Ellen Hill. To this union were born eight children. One died in infancy. Another daughter died a few years ago. Those present during the obsequies were Mrs. Cora Graves of Beloit, Kansas, Mrs. Frank Parrott of Springdale, Arkansas; Louie Pierce and Rolla Pierce, the two sons at home; a little grand-daughter; and his faithful, loving wife. Two sons, William Pierce and Charles Pierce were absent in the west and could not be present. The deceased with his family came to Springdale 18 years ago from Grand Island Nebraska. At the time of his death he was living on a farm ten miles west of Springdale. He had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since a young man and was fully prepared for his departure to the better world. He had been sick with typhoid fever for ten weeks which resulted in death at 4 o'clock p.m. August 17, 1911. He was buried at Shady Grove cemetery, two and a half miles southwest of Springdale. The funeral discourse was preached by Rev. W.C. Evans of the M.E. Church and the Ritual Service of Grand Army of Republic, of which he had been a faithful member, was used at the grave in paying the last sad rights to this worthy brother and Comrade.
