He grew up on a farm near Green Castle Lake by Ferguson with his five brothers and three sisters. When I was a young child and would visit Grandma’s and Ben’s farmstead it was like Christmas all year long. Uncle Ben had the neatest gifts for us. He had an old barn, complete with a haymow, old harnesses, ropes for climbing, and the best hiding places ever. There were hills for sledding, a pumpkin patch and the most prized vegetables. It was a treat to accompany him anywhere. Getting firewood or coal; water from the rain barrel or feeding the chickens. His shed was filled with muskrat furs, traps, pheasant tails, precious fox furs, and many old feed stacks. He was like a peddler opening his pack. I loved to view his most recent treasures – walnuts, squash, possums, a rake or shovel given him by a neighbor he had recently helped. It never really mattered what was on the bags. It was the excitement that he generated from the twinkle in his eye or the grin on his face. We was far more fascinating than the contents in the bag. Sleeping over was also a treat. Ben would give up his big ol’ feather bed for one of us to sleep in. We would go to bed early to the smell of the cook stove and the tick of the old clock. A peace only the old house could fill. Every Christmas we would journey down the winding gravel road from Gilman to their farm. What a winter wonderland with all that sparkling snow on the hillsides and trees. I could imagine the thrill of the big family shared with their neighbors in days gone by. A small Christmas tree awaited us. A homemade gift from Grandma, cookies and milk, and the very special bag of apples, oranges, peanuts, and $2 for each of us from Uncle Ben. “Just a little sump ‘in for the kids,” he would say with a grin. Uncle Ben adjusted to city life in the early 60’s. The farmstead is just another driveway to a farmer’s field. Grandma is gone along with a sister and a brother. Only the memories of the farmstead remain. The stories are retold and added to every fall at the James and Florence Fuller reunion held at Green Castle Lake, just walking distance from the old place. Uncle Ben can be found with sister Edith Botts several nights a week at Marshalltown’s bingo establishments. The twinkle of his eyes and the very shy smile are still to be enjoyed by many friends and family. By Martha Fuller Drew Marshalltown, IA
