Finch Old Soldier and Pioneer of County Died Friday at His Home Here Benoni W. Finch, the subject of this sketch, was born in Niles, Mich., March 1, 1831. He removed to Jefferson county, Wis., in August, 1845, and came to Westfield township, Fayette county, Iowa in 1857. He came to West Union in October, 1872. In the hour of his country’s need her call did not fall on deaf ears. He enlisted Aug. 11, 1862, in Company G, 38th Iowa Volunteer infantry. He was in all the battles and skirmishes in which his regiment participated and was mustered out Sept. 6, 1865. He was united in marriage to Mary E. Butler Oct. 31, 1861. To them were born five children, two of whom survive to mourn the loss of father—Gilbert B. of Oklahoma City, Okla, Mrs. Margaret E. Branch and Mrs. Ella G. Musser, both of this city. One sister, Mrs. Hannah Hyde of Ft. Atkinson, Wis., and one brother, G. B. Finch of Fayette, and numerous other relatives also survive him. Since coming to West Union Mr. Finch has resided here almost continuously. He, however, spent the winter 1904-5 in California and the winter of 1908-9 in Florida. He was taken ill about five weeks ago, and was confined to his bed for three weeks. He passed away peacefully, Friday, June 2, at noon. Mr. Finch will be greatly missed in this community, where he had lived so many years and where he was so well known. In private life his character shone with peculiar brightness as a devoted husband and father. As a public spirited citizen, a patriot, he was well known. When the war broke out he heard his country’s call and willingly responded. He risked life and health in the service of his country. He never begrudged that sacrifice though in that service his health was undermined so that he suffered therefrom more or less during the remainder of his life. He not only did not begrudge the sacrifice but he gloried in that he had been able to do something for his country. Public affairs were always of deep interest to him and even in his last illness he was desirous of reading the papers that he might keep abreast of the times. Another patriot, another soldier in the rapidly thinning ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic has answered the final summons and is followed in sorrow and yet in triumph to the grave. Mr. Finch also served many years as a member of the city council and a justice of the peace in West Union. Mr. Finch was a self-made man. He grew up an orphan in a frontier settlement, securing his education under most adverse circumstances, and became an intelligent and refined man. In an active life in West Union covering a period of thirty years no one could be found who would accuse him of being grasping or selfish. His character was strong and courageous. He was always ready to resist unjust aggression and at the same time ready to suffer loss if he might thereby aid the deserving. He was a Christian man and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in West Union. The funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, June 27, in the Methodist church in West Union, conducted by Rev. L. A. Swisher, assisted by F. M. Dowlin and Rev. J. W. Baumgardner. An unusually large assemblage of friends was present to do honor to his memory, and Abernethy post of the G. A. R. and the Women’s Relief corps attended in a body. Beautiful and appropriate music was furnished by Mrs. Stam and Mrs. Woodard, singers, and Miss Edna Sampson, pianist.
