Finch Burial Tuesday Returned From Casey, Ill., Where She Had Lived With Daughter The body of the late Mrs. Mary Butler Finch arrived in West Union Tuesday, to be laid to rest in the West Union cemetery beside that of her husband, B. W. Finch, and among the people of whom she was fond in life. Mrs. Finch left West Union a year ago last November, with her only remaining child, Mrs. M. O. Musser, for Casey, Ill., where she had remained continuously since. She was ill about a week before the end, but suffered no pain. Her passing at the ag of ninety-two years, and a few months, was but the end of a journey begun many years before, and of which she had physically tired so much that it seemed she had but fallen asleep, to wake on earth no more. Mrs. Finch was greatly beloved in West Union, where she came from Ohio with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Harrison Butler in 1850. She went to school in Fayette county and grew to womanhood on the Butler farm south of this city. In 1861 she married Benoni W. Finch, also of West Union, and they established there home here, Mr. Finch operating a general merchandise store for many years in the building just north of the Union office. He was also a civil war veteran and in the years of his failing health, was succeeded in business by his son-in-law, E. B. Branch, now of Decorah. After her husband’s death, Mrs Finch continued active, going about her household duties, helping in the work of her church and fraternal organization, the Rebekah lodge, as long as she could. She was young for one of her years, and possessed a keen mind and active body up to within a few years of her death. Her eyesight became defective, but she remained in West Union, going about town with the aid of a cane until finally she was persuaded to go to Casey to live with her daughter. Of the several children born to Mr. and Mrs. Finch, but one survives, Mrs. Ella Musser. Two children, “Bert,” whose home was in Oklahoma, and Mrs. Margaret Branch, who lived in West Union, died after establishing homes of their own. Of her brothers and sisters, two outlive her, John Butler of West Union, and Mrs. Sarah Hough of Oelwein; also two grandchildren, Paul Musser of Casey, and Harry Branch of Los Angeles. There are nieces and and nephews living in Oelwein, and some of these were in attendance at the funeral Tuesday, which was held in the M. E. church of which she had been a longtime member. The pastor, Rev. T. M. Nielsen, paid tribute to the character of the deceased as a Christian woman. Singers were Mrs. Lionel Weston and Mrs. Oliver Anderson. Pall bearers were W. W. Wright, John Howard, B. D. Chandler, A. W. Hoover, J. H. Cline and W. H. Beall. West Union friends who had known Mrs. Finch for so many years recall her kind deeds and friendly spirit and extend to those who remain their deepest sympathy.
