Rexwinkel of Alton, early Sunday morning wrapped her night clothes about her aged form, set them afire and slowly burned to death. Rexwinkel of Alton, early Sunday morning wrapped her night clothes about her aged form, set them afire and slowly burned to death. Nearly thirty years ago the Rexwinkel's came to Alton and settled on a fine farm southwest of town. They were industrious, became prosperous, and were highly respected. Sometime ago they moved to Alton in order to enjoy the rest and leisure which had been richly earned. Then it was learned that Mrs. Rexwinkel had doubtless overtaxed her strength at some time and was dangerously if not incurably ill. She was sent to Clarinda in the hope that the treatment of expert physicians might restore her to health. A week's stay there convinced them that they could do nothing and she was brought home. Mr. Rexwinkel, with great care fitted up a room with heavy window screens and barred door. For weeks after her return from the asylum relatives and neighbors watched her constantly night and day and it was not until recently that she was left alone. On Sunday morning the husband, who slept in the next room, was awakened at 2 a.m. by smelling smoke. He ran to his wife's room, broke down the door and saw her standing motionless and silent on the floor, her clothes all ablaze and flames rising, above her head. Help was hastily called, blankets wrapped about her body and the fire put out. Three hours later Mrs. Rexwinkel died having uttered not one cry of pain through the flesh had been burned out of recognition. A daughter, Mrs. Herman Riedeman was in the house and with her husband they called Tom Kooreman and John Meyer who assisted all in their power. Dr. Smith soon reached the house but he could do nothing and so informed the family. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the Reformed Church. Hull Index - 24 November 1899
