Bernadine Deters was born April 2, 1882 in Plymouth county. Harpenau Mrs. Frank (Bernadine) Harpenau who resided at 37 6th Avenue Southeast died on Monday, April 25, I960, at her home after a sickness of six months. Bernadine Deters was born April 2, 1882 in Plymouth county. Her marriage to Frank Haprenau took place February 6, 1900 in Le Mars. the couple farmed near Le Mars until 1947 when they retired to Le Mars. Her parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. John Deters. Funeral services were held today, April 29 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with a solemn requeim mass celebrated by her son, Rev. Leo Harpenau, pastor of Sacred Heart parish, Templeton. Rev. Charles Kneip of Manson was Deacon; Rev. Mervin Hood of Le Mars, Sub-Deacon and Rev. Elmer Thorn, Master of Ceremonies. Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. D. Fisch, pastor at St. Joseph's where deceased was a longtime member, preached the sermon. Burial was in Calvary cemetery under direction of the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home. Mrs. Harpenau was a member of Christian Mothers Society who recited the rosary at 3 p.m. Wednesday and the Third Order of St. Francis who recited the rosary at 3:15 p.m. the same day. Acting as pallbearers were six grandsons, Gerald Harpenau; William Harpenau; James Harpenau; Robert Kolbeck, Marvin Schwarz, and LeRoy Harpenau. Mrs. Harpenau is survived by 114 direct descendents, including four daughters, six sons, 65 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. Her children are: Mrs. Anton (Mary) Kolbeck of Humboldt, S.D., Mrs. Joe (Philomena) Schwarz of Merrill, Mrs. Marvin (Rita) Kolbeck and Mrs. Ed (Evelyn) Miller, both of Le Mars, Jack, Henry, Tony, Isadore and Al, all of Remsen, and Rev. Leo Harpenau of Templeton. Also surviving are three sisters, Sister M. Fabian, Sisters of Mercy, Dubuque, Josephine Deters of Le Mars and Mrs. Joe (Clara) Kolbeck of Salem, S.D., and two brothers, Anthony and John Deters, both of Le Mars. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; a son, Joseph; a son and daughter in infancy; two brothers and three sisters.
