Bernard Allen Martens was born December 21, 1936 on the family farm south of Lyman, the son of Hans John and Florence Elizabeth (Askey) Martens. "Bud" Martens, 67, a lifelong resident of Lyman, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2004 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. Bernard Allen Martens was born December 21, 1936 on the family farm south of Lyman, the son of Hans John and Florence Elizabeth (Askey) Martens. Bud attended country schools in the Lyman area and graduated from the Griswold high school in 1954. He served in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado. While home on leave, but married LaVern Pearl Petersen on March 12, 1961 at St. John's United Church of Christ, south of Lyman. After his discharge from the Army the couple moved back to Iowa and farmed in the Lyman area. Bud retired from farming at the age of 62 due to ill health. Bud was baptized, confirmed and married at St. John's United Church of Christ where he served on the church board. He loved to hunt, fish and bird watch. He thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors. Bud is survived by his wife LaVern of Lyman; three sons, Tony of Atlantic, Todd and his wife, Michelle of Griswold, and Terry of Exira; four grandchildren, Sarah and Maggie, both of Atlantic and Molly and Matthew, both of Griswold; a sister, Marjorie and her husband, James Miller of Red Oak; three sisters-in-law, Jan Petersen of Atlantic, Judy Roberts and Jean Petersen, both of Exira; a brother-in-law, Earl and his wife, Joyce Christiansen of Fontanelle; an aunt and uncle, Mildred Ann Maurice Kennon of Stanton; his aunt, Irene Martens of the Heritage House in Atlantic; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter-in-law, Kelly Martens; brothers-in-law, Max and Jim Petersen, and a sister-in-law, Roberta Christiansen. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 9 at St. John's United Church of Christ, south of Lyman. The Rev. Jim Hansen will officiate, assisted by C. G. Lindeman. Interment will be in Weirich Cemetery near Lyman. Open visitation will be held all day Sunday with the family present to greet friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. that evening.
