On Tuesday last, April 11. 1899, all that was mortal of Bernard Aulwes passed from this life. The subject of this sketch was born at Nulla, Hanover, Germany, on March 2, 1810, and was married to Miss Elizabeth Varke, in the year 1835. He and his wife came to America in 1842 and for three years they lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, and came to this county March 26, 1845, and settled on a farm about three miles northwest of Guttenberg and commenced farming with his brother, Frederick as a partner, and by hard labor succeeded in carrying out one of the finest farms in this section of the county. To Mr. and Mrs. Aulwes were born six children, four of whom survive him. They are: Mrs. Jos. Menges, of Arlington, Iowa, Henry Aulwes, Mrs. Martin Dittmer and William Aulwes, all living near this city. On September 5th, 1863, he affiliated with the German I. O. O. F. lodge at this place and up to a few years ago was a devoted member of the order and attended all meetings unt (sic) old age caused him to be away from meetings but in his heart he had the same feeling for the welfare of the order. He was also a member of the Guttenberg Turuverein and was always present at the meetings and social gatherings until age compelled him to keep at home. He was a great friend to the business interests of Guttenberg and anything that was for the good of the town always had his hearty support. He was a lover of music and singing and always helped to push it to the front wherever an opportunity offered itself. His wife died thirteen years ago and since then has lived with his son William. The funeral was held Thursday, April 14, 1899, under the auspices of the I. O. O. F., lodge with burial in the city cemetery. The very large funeral procession that followed the remains to the grave showed the high appreciation the people of this part of the county had for him. Besides his surviving children to be left seventeen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren to mourn his departure from this earth. Also a large concourse of relatives and friends will miss him from among them. One by one the old settlers of this community are passing away but the monuments they have reared and the memory of their good deeds remain in the minds of the younger generations. Mr. Aulwes life on earth is at an end and may his eternal sleep be one of peace.
