Bernie was born on February 2, 1930 to Harry and Belle Mason in Sterling. He attended schools in Sterling. As a young man, Bernie enjoyed participating in rodeos, riding rough stock and traveling with friends and family to the events. On February 25, 1951, Bernie married Betty Stull. In August 1951, he was drafted into the Army and went on to serve 18 months in the Korean War. Following his service in the military, his efforts for our country were recognized with two Commendation Ribbons and Metals for meritorious service while a member of the 196th Field Artillery Battalion. Upon returning to Sterling after the war, Bernie and Betty resided in Sterling and started their family. Barry, Berna Jo and Brenda were all welcomed to the Mason family. Sadly, Berna Jo was taken from them at age 4 ½ years. A few years later, they moved to a farm and ranch north of Willard. It was the country life that Bernie loved. He farmed, raised cattle and enjoyed roping with Barry and showing horses with Brenda. He was a great neighbor to all. Always willing to help a neighbor put up hay, harvest wheat, build fence, do chores or repair what was broken. Bernie went to work for Public Service Company of Colorado as a meter reader shortly after returning from Korea. He would remain with the company for 33 years, retiring in 1986 as an appliance repairman in the Electric Service Division. He made longtime friends there, one of which would remain his “brother” for life. Bernie was the best husband and father. He cared for Betty all her life and was there to tend to her every need when she became sick. As a Dad, Barry and Brenda were blessed with a man who had patience, was willing to teach, always tilted a listening ear, and had a strong moral compass. He was tough yet tender, driven yet forgiving, and believed that a job worth doing was worth doing right. And always, a sense of humor and laughter were a part of the Mason family. Bernie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Sterling Elks Lodge. He loved his family with a passion, reveled at the accomplishments of his children and grandsons, and celebrated every occasion along the way. Bernie is survived by son Barry and wife Deanne of Willard, daughter Brenda and husband Jeff Hase of Sterling, grandson Brandon and wife Jess of Willard and grandson Kevin and wife Leslie of Willard. He is also survived by three great grandchildren. Bernie is also survived by brother Charles “Chuck” Mason of Sterling, and numerous nieces and nephews who all loved Uncle Bernie. He was proceeded in death by wife Betty, daughter Berna Jo, parents Harry and Belle Mason, brothers Harold, James, and Robert Mason and sister Virginia Scherer.
