Mr. Bernard "Bud" Schroer, of Omaha passed away at the Hospice House in Omaha on Monday, April 17, 2006. The death followed an (sic) lengthy illness these past few months. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at Sacred Heart church (sic) in Lawrence on Saturday, April 22, 2006 with Rev. Loren Grell offering the Mass. Assisting at the Mass were: Organist Linda Ostdiek; Song Leaders: Vicki Kucera and Joyce Hoelting; Lector: Craig Buescher; and Acolyte: Rich Menke. Active Pallbearers were: Andy Schroer, Ryan Schroer, Dave Amelotte, Eric Himmelberg, Frank Roeder and Barry Wombacher. Honorary Pallbearers were: Kevin Himmelberg, Rick Parillo, Louie Pratters, Ted Retzlaff, Boyd McCartney, Robert Menke, and Dave Kroupa. Family members carried the Offertory gifts to the Altar and each niece or nephew presented a red rose in memory of Bud. Ryan Schroer read a testimonial to Bud following the service. The Knights of Columbus, Council 1906, stood as an Honor Guard for Mr. Schroer. Burial was in the Sacred Heart cemetery (sic) east of Lawrence. Bernard G. Schroer (known by most as "Bud") was born on October 18, 1951 to Arnold J. and Pearl M. (Wombacher) Schroer at Nelson, Nebr. He attended St. Stephen parish school through the 8th grade and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1970. Bud completed his dream of a college education in 1978 when he earned a Bachelor of Science in business Administration degree from Creighton University in Omaha. From 1975 to 1981, he was an advisor from the Omaha Mayor's Commission on the Handicapped. In 1984 Bud joined Mutual of Omaha in the customer services dept. He transferred to the Purchasing Service Dept. in 1985 and moved again to the Group Underwriting Dept. in 1988. Mr. Schroer received numerous promotions within the Underwriting department. Most recently, he was in charge of the Group Underwriting Training program for all Group Underwriters and Group Sale Representatives. Mr. Schroer was a member of St. Gerald's Catholic church (sic) in Omaha and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Knights of Columbus. Bernard had spent 36 years of his life in a wheel chair, being paralyzed from near the neck down due to an accident in the final football game of his High School playing days. He was well known around Lawrence and surrounding communities. The determination and fortitude shown by Bud during these past 36 years earned the love and respect of all of his extended family and many friends over the years. A guiding theme of Bud's (pointed out by many during this past week) during his life was summed up as, "Faith - Family - Friends". In spite of what many people would consider an obstacle to huge to overcome, Bud learned to live with what he could and could not do. Other than the physical limitation, there was little he could not do as he relied on "Faith, Family and Friends" for sustenance and they came to rely on Bud for the very same things. Mr. Schroer was preceded in death by his father, Arnold; he is survived by his mother: Pearl, of Lawrence; two brothers, Larry and his wife: Debbie, of Bennington, Nebr.; Roy, and his wife: Jean, of Omaha; two sisters: Jean Ann Himmelberg and her husband, Ken, of Nelson, and Bonnie Roeder and her husband, Don, of Plymouth, Minn: 13 nieces and nephews; 12 great nieces and nephews; numerous relatives and friends.
