On May 6, 1952 he was united in marriage to Geraldine Schendt at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Lawrence, Nebraska. This union was blessed with six children. Bernard farmed near Lawrence for 31 year (sic) before moving to Superior, where he was employed with the Nuckolls County Road Department as Road Supervisor for 16 years. Bernard was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Superior, Nebraska for 20 years, and a past Grand Knight and honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Elks Lodge #2197. He lived in the communities of Lawrence, Nelson and Superior. Preceding him in death were his parents, three grandsons, Jason and David Menke and Michael Willey, one granddaughter, Renee Ostdiek. Survivors include his wife Gerri of Superior, Nebraska; son, Gary and wife Bernita of Nelson, Nebraska; daughter, Carolyn Menke and husband Raymond of Hastings, Nebraska; son Thomas and wife Deborah of Superior, Nebraska; son, Loren and wife Karen of Lawrence, Nebraska; and daughters, Dianne Willey and husband Patrick and Janet Brooke and husband John all of Hastings, Nebraska; sister, Agnes Ostdiek of Blue Hill, Nebraska; brother, Vincent and wife Evelyn of Hastings, Nebraska; and sisters, Viola Pavelka and husband Alvin of Atlanta, Georgia; and Rita Mazour and husband Jerome of Lawrence, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and a host of friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, November 17, 2003 at 10:30 AM from the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Superior, Nebraska with Father Philip Luther officiating. Music was congregational hymns "Amazing Grace", "Gift Of Finest Wheat", "O Jesus We Adore Thee" and "Be Not Afraid", with Betty Schott as organist. Lector was Mel Menke, Acolyte was Richard Sullivan and Altar Servers were Drew Leibel and Jared Hass. Pallbearers were Chad Ostdiek, Daren Ostdiek, Kevin Ostdiek, Wes Ostdiek, Ken Ostdiek and Larry Mazour. Honorary Pallbearers were Angie Kleen, Stacy Ostdiek, Michelle Snook, Lisa Menke, Tracy Ostdiek, Jody Vernon, Nikki Buchanan and Josh Willey. Rosary service was held Sunday, November 16, 2003 at 7:00 PM at the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska.
