Description	:	Dr. Bernard St. Clair Logan, 88, formerly of Staunton, VA, died Friday, August 18 at the Bridgewater Retirement Home in Bridgewater, VA. He was born Jan. 13, 1918 in Asheville, NC, the son of John R. Logan and Mary English Logan. Read More	Dr. Bernard St. Clair Logan, 88, formerly of Staunton, VA, died Friday, August 18 at the Bridgewater Retirement Home in Bridgewater, VA. He was born Jan. 13, 1918 in Asheville, NC, the son of John R. Logan and Mary English Logan. A graduate of Harrisonburg High School, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Bridgewater College in 1938. He taught at Dayton High School 1938-39 and at Harrisonburg High School 1940-42 before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942. He served as an officer in the Pacific theater for four years during WWII and retired from the Marine Corps Reserves with the rank of major in 1963. Following military service, Dr. Logan completed masters and Ph. D. degrees in history and economics at the University of Wisconsin in 1949. He taught at the University of Akron, the University of Pittsburgh and Geneva College before joining the faculty of Bridgewater College in 1959. He served as chair of the Economics and Business Department and built it into one of Bridgewaters strongest majors. He taught at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton from 1967-78, chairing the Dept of Economics. Dr. Logan returned to Bridgewater as Professor and Chair of Economics and Business Administration until his retirement in 1984 when he was awarded professor emeritus status. In 2000 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by Bridgewater College during Founders Day Convocation. Over three decades of teaching, Dr Logan was a friend and mentor to countless students. He remained in touch with many of them throughout his life and took great joy in their friendship and accomplishments. Dr Logan was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church for over 30 years serving as elder, clerk of the session, and member of the Pulpit Nominating Committee. He served on the board of Rockingham Milling Company for many years, and researched and authored The History of RMC, 1919-1989, Seventy Years of Progress. While retired he served the community through volunteer activities including the Blue Ridge Food Bank. Anyone who knew Dr. Logan quickly discovered he was an avid train fan. His love of trains began as a child watching them from his backyard in Harrisonburg. Whenever he traveled, he planned the trip around train schedules and routes. He and his wife crisscrossed the US and Canada many times by train. His graduate work at Wisconsin included research on rail development in France. He collected railroad artifacts and memorabilia. The basement of his home contained a model train layout depicting the C & O Railroad during the 1950s from Staunton to White Sulphur Springs. He scratch built many of the rail cars and buildings. Dr Logan, or Bernie as he was known to many, was a familiar fixture at the Staunton Railroad Station. He knew many of the AMTRAK crews and frequently rode the stretch between Staunton and Clifton Forge. He wrote an article entitled Railroad History on the Blue Ridge for the Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Magazine. Dr Logan is survived by his wife of 63 years the former Eleanor Nolte, daughters Susan Craun of Harrisonburg, Margaret Vincie of The Plains, sons-in-law Dr. Galen Craun, Jr and John L. Vincie, grandchildren Galen Craun III, Austin Craun, Meghann Vincie and Kaitlyn Vincie, and two great-granddaughters. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 26 at 1:00 pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton. The service will be led by Rev. John Peterson.
