Description	:	Bernard Wilber Ver Meer was born on February 14, 1920, at the home of his parents, A. A. (Antonie) and Johanna (Kolenbrander) Ver Meer near Pella, Iowa. He was the second of five children and received a grade school education at the Pella Christian Grade School in Pella. Bernie began farming at a very young age with his grandfather, Brant Ver Meer. They were married in a... Read More	Bernard Wilber Ver Meer was born on February 14, 1920, at the home of his parents, A. A. (Antonie) and Johanna (Kolenbrander) Ver Meer near Pella, Iowa. He was the second of five children and received a grade school education at the Pella Christian Grade School in Pella. Bernie began farming at a very young age with his grandfather, Brant Ver Meer. He later farmed with Cornie Vos, his brother-in-law. Bernie met Dorothy Nell Van Lienden, who became his future wife, around the square in downtown Pella which was somewhat of a custom back then. They were married in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Roelofina and her husband, Gysbert Groenenboom on February 24, 1944, at the home of their parents, J.A. and Judith (Wanders) Van Lienden. Bernie and Dorothy had three sons: Alvin, Kenneth, and David. Bernie continued farming in the Pella area the remainder of his working lifetime. He raised hogs, sheep, and cattle and was dairying when he retired. During all these years he was particularly fond of horses, and occasionally remarked using horses was much better than todays implements. He also enjoyed raising and riding the horses; doing wood working and reading, particularly Westerns. He would read books every chance he got, even sometimes at the dinner table. In 1994 Bernie and Dorothy moved into Pella and continued to reside there until May, 2016, when they became residents at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Bernie passed away there on Sunday, January 22, 2017, prior to his 97th birthday. He is survived by his wife for nearly 73 years, Dorothy; his three sons and their wives and their families. They are: Al and Carolyn (Brand) Ver Meer of Pella, Iowa Steve Ver Meer Brian and Denise Ver Meer Nathan, Alex, and Daniel Anita and Kory Fischer Jaci, Brandon, and Carlee Ken and Janna (Bogaard) Ver Meer of Leighton, Iowa Matt and Emily Ver Meer Claire, Nora, and Eva Brandon and Melissa Ver Meer Conner, Abby Peters Dave and Diann (McMains) Ver Meer of Oskaloosa, Iowa Adam and Jen Ver Meer Carter, Callie Amy and Mike Brainard Everett Of his original family Bernie leaves his youngest sister, Janice, and her husband, Loren Vander Wert and a sister-in-law Alice (Melvin) Ver Meer all of Pella. He was preceded in death by his parents, A.A. and Johanna Ver Meer; his oldest sister, Gladys and her husband, Cornie Vos; his two brothers: Byron Ver Meer and his wife, Evalena (Van Hemert) and his wife Patsy (Van Zee), Melvin Ver Meer; his parents-in-law, J.A. and Judith Van Lienden; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Roelofina and Gysbert Groenenboom. Bernie was baptized and made profession of his faith at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella where he had served several terms as a Deacon.
