Bunny Jacobs was born on July 17, 1924, to William and Myrtle Taylor on the family ranch north of Whitman. Bunny Jacobs was born on July 17, 1924, to William and Myrtle Taylor on the family ranch north of Whitman. Bunny and her twin brother, Billy, were born at home in a time when expectant parents didn’t know there would be twins. Billy was born first, so Bunny was a surprise. Her parents named her Berneice Elvira, but her father called her Bunny, and that is how her friends and family knew her for 91 years. Bunny spent her childhood north of Whitman, attending country school, helping her parents milk cows and riding the range with her siblings. During the Great Depression, she felt fortunate that they had everything they needed because of the wet meadows that allowed their family to continue to raise cattle and have a garden. Bunny went to high school at the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis. She loved every minute of that experience and was proud to be an Aggie alum. During World War II, Bunny worked in defense plants in Flint, Michigan, and Burbank, California, a brave undertaking for a country girl. She came home for a few weeks during that time and over a fried chicken dinner at her parents’ home, she met Ellis “Jake” Jacobs, who would become her husband of 71 years. Jake and Bunny were married on Aug. 19, 1944, in Mullen at the home of the Methodist minister. They raised their family on the ranch south of Mullen, where Bunny tended a beautiful garden, kept the home and yard in immaculate form and cooked three full meals a day from scratch. Bunny was involved with the United Methodist Women and the Goodwill Extension Club, and she was known for providing a helping hand whenever and wherever it was needed. She had a knack for entertaining, so there were always extra people around the dinner table and Bunny made it seem effortless. If there was a potluck dinner, you could count on her to bring fried chicken, homemade rolls and a beautiful cake or pie. Bunny’s family was her greatest pride and joy. Bunny spent quality time with her nieces and nephews, who have fond memories of visits to the ranch and will miss her deeply. Bunny was preceded in death by her sister, June Magnuson; sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Don Carpenter; brother, Woodrow Taylor; and her beloved twin brother, Billy Taylor, and his wife, Carol. She leaves behind her husband, Jake; their four children, Jeff (Cleo) Jacobs, of Mullen, Philip (Elizabeth) Jacobs, of San Antonio, Texas, Kirk (Jodi) Jacobs, of Mullen, and Heidi (Tom) Piccini, of Lincoln; seven grandchildren, Andy (Mindy) Wright, Kelly (Wade) Marsh, Joel (Megan) Jacobs, Jesse (Kady) Jacobs, Tara Piccini Manzello, Brian Piccini and Jake Piccini; 12 great-grandchildren Ashton Wright, Ella Wright, Owen Wright, Hadley Marsh, Kyler Marsh, Emery Jacobs, Brooks Jacobs, Liam Jacobs, Brett Jacobs, Dominic Grove, Arianna Manzello and Matthew Manzello; and brother-in-law, Don Magnuson. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the United Methodist Church in Mullen. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Whitman Cemetary. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
