The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, November 16, 1989; pg. 1 ================== Berness Vernon Miller was born December 13, 1903, to William H. and Phoebe (Cox) Miller on a farm near Mt. Clare, Nebraska, and passed away November 13, 1989, at the Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska, at the age of 85 years and 11 months. Berness attended country school near Mt. Clare. On April 22, 1947, Berness was married to Mildred Combs. This union was blessed with four children. They farmed and worked a dairy farm for many years. Mildred passed away May 27, 1982, and on September 20 1982, he was married to Anna Andersen Miller. They were making their home in Nelson, Nebraska, at the time of his death. Berness was a member and decon (sic) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Nelson and was a very active member in church affairs. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mildred; three brothers, Joe, Walter and Bernard; two sisters, Susie Lassiter and Clemence Lewis; and two half-sisters, Alma Thorpe and Lula Hasse. He is survived by his wife Anna of the home in Nelson; two daughters, Sharon Miller and Karon Andretti, both of Lincoln, Nebraska; two sons, Jim Miller and his wife Connie of Mt. Clare, Nebraska, and Larry Miller and his wife Dawn of Nelson; two step-daughters, Betty Underwood and her husband Lincoln of Cortez, Colorado, and Carolyn Engeberg and her husband Howard of Durango, Colorado; a step-son, Dr. Bill Miller and his wife Marilyn of Littleton, Colorado; six grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, eight step-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 16, 1989, at 2:00 p.m. from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, Nebraska, with Pastor Harold Kaufman officiating. Music was provided by Aleene and Gene Schaffer singing a duet of "The Nearer, The Sweete" and "Where We'l Never Grow Old" with Carlita Price as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were Glen Frerichs, Ronald Buescher, Ronald Porter, John Combs, Tom Karmazin and Dennis Combs. Honorary pallbearers were Ivan Jacobitz, Max Lanham, Bill Schendt, Richard Schleif and Gene Schaeffer. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery near Nelson, Nebraska.
