The boys had started on a visit to a neighbors, and had stopped to bathe in the river, while on the way. Bert, the younger of the two boys had been wading and swimming in shallow water, and gradually began to feel his way out into the deeper water. He suddenly struck a deep hole and went down. John, the elder of the two boys, then jumped into the water after his brother. When Bert rose to the surface he caught hold of John's foot, and the latter swam for the shore, thus towing his brother. John was almost within reach of some shrubs when Bert in his weakened condition let go of his brother's foot. John immediately turned and went to the hand rescue of Bert, but the current; was swift and carried them back to the dangerous hole in the river. John made a most heroic attempt to save his brother. He might have saved his own life, but he bravely and unselfishly relinquished every chance, and wore himself out in trying to rescue his exhausted brother. They both went down to their watery grave, the elder one displaying the highest type of heroism. He gave all he had, every promise of the future-life itself-when life is sweetest, in a vain attempt to save a beloved brother. Others present were Perry Sutherland, Gus and Herman Schwindt, the latter of whom was in the water. Two of them went for help and Herman attempted a rescue of the two Leesekamp buys but did not succeed. The Leesekamps were not good swimmers, and were therefore, undoubtedly more or less frightened, and unable to expend their strength in the best possible manner in getting out of the water. Bert's body was in the water an hour, too long to make resuscitation possible, although Dr. Hunter made an attempt. Life was extinct. The other body was not recovered until evening. The point at which the drowning occurred is the deepest hole in the river for many miles up and down from that place. It Is known as the swimming hole back of Himebaugh's. There in a big rock that juts out into the water, and for a distance of twenty feet from the rock the water is fourteen feet deep. The step off is very sudden and the hole is treacherous to the amateur swimmer. The boys had been warned of this deep hole by Herman Schwindt. The boys wore 16 and 18 years of age, and are survived by their father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Lambertus Leesekamp, one brother and five sisters. The funeral was held at the Leesekamp home in Scotch Grove by Rev. C. Mardorf, last Tuesday morning, at ten o'clock, and interment was at the Wayne cemetery. The funeral was largely attended for the boys wore well liked, and the friends of the family sympathized deeply with the bereaved parents and their children.
