The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, September 23, 1976; pg. 2 ============ A long time resident of Nelson, Bernice Crandell, passed away September 18, 1976 at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. She fell August 30 and sustained a fractured hip, then suffered a heart attack September 7, 1976. Bernice Emily Churchill was born northeast of Nora, September 4, 1884. She was the fourth child of a family of nine born to Bernard and Jane Ann Churchill. Bernice lived near Nora until 1903, at which time her parents moved to a farm south of Nelson. November 11, 1903, Bernice married John Marion Crandell and they made their home in Nelson. To this union four children, Lillian V., Kenneth C., Darrel B., and John Meredith, were born. Mr. & Mrs. Crandell operated a greenhouse in Nelson from 1920 until the time of his death December 20,1924. With the help of her sons, Mrs. Crandell continued operation of the greenhouse until 1927. In 1946 she sold her home in Nelson and moved to Superior. In November, 1968, Bernice moved to Elk Creek Manor, where she resided at the time of her death. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Lillian Hamel; five brothers; and three sisters. She is survived by her three sons, Kenneth of Hemet, Calif., Darrel of Cody, Neb. John Meredith of Pomona, Calif; 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 3 great, great grandchildren, a host of other relatives and many friends. Mrs. Crandell was a charter member of the United Methodist Womens Society. She was a faithful worker in her church as long as her health permitted, and she still loved to attend the activities of her church when she was able. In 1971 she was awarded a plaque for being the oldest resident who had lived in Nuckolls County all of her life. Funeral services for Mrs. Crandell were held from the Nelson Methodist Church, Friday, September 24. Rev. Clair Kess officiating. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery.
