Description	:	John Marion Crandell, oldest son of James and Sarah Crandell, was born on the farm near Oak, Nebraska, February 28, 1881, and departed this life at Hebron, Nebraska, December 20, 1924, aged 43 years, 9 months and 22 days. Read More	John Marion Crandell, oldest son of James and Sarah Crandell, was born on the farm near Oak, Nebraska, February 28, 1881, and departed this life at Hebron, Nebraska, December 20, 1924, aged 43 years, 9 months and 22 days. When about six years old his parents moved to Nelson. Here he completed his education, graduating from the Nelson High School May 23, 1901. He taught school near Ruskin one year. Since then he has been working for Uncle Sam carrying mail for twenty-one years. On November 11, 1903, he was united in marriage to Bernice Churchill. Mr. Crandell was in the officers training camp four months during the World war (sic). When 17 years old he united with the Christian church. Six years ago he united with the Methodist church and has lived a Christian at heart ever since. He leaves to mourn his death: his wife, one daughter, Lillian, and three sons, Kenneth, Darrel and Meredith; also seven brothers and one sister, and two half sisters. Only one brother, the sister and the two half sisters were able to attend the funeral. Mr. Crandell recently became Commander of the Nelson American Legion Post, and was also a member of the Nelson Band. These organizations attended the funeral in a body. The funeral service was held in the Nelson Methodist church, Sunday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Vincent R. Beebe, assisted by the Rev. Stephen Jones of the Presbyterian church. The Methodist choir rendered some selections which were favorites of the departed. After the sermon while the people passed the casket the Band rendered appropriate selections. Mr. H.G. Cottle of the local Legion Post, expressed in a few well chosen remarks the comradeship of the American Legion and their farewell. The Band and the Legion boys marched in the procession to the cemetery, where the Band played fittingly, and following the committal service of the church, the American Legion closed the service with military honors for the departed. The high esteem in which Mr. Crandell and his family are held by every body, was evidenced by the very beautiful floral tributes and the fact that the attendance was about he (sic) larges (sic) ever present on such an occasion in Nelson.
