She was born on April 26, 1931, in the family home near Americus, Kansas, the daughter of James Rankin and Gladys Pauline (Stewart) Brown. (Brown) Schoneweis Bernice LaVon (Brown) Schoneweis, age 84, of Manhattan, Kansas, died Monday morning, October 26, 2015, at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas following an extended illness. She was born on April 26, 1931, in the family home near Americus, Kansas, the daughter of James Rankin and Gladys Pauline (Stewart) Brown. Bernice attended local schools, graduating from Americus High School in 1948. Bernice attended Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas for 2 years, where she was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. She transferred to Kansas State University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition in 1952. After graduation she worked in Minneapolis, MN for Pillsbury in their research center. In 1954 she returned to Manhattan where she joined the Department of Foods and Nutrition, working first in research and later as an instructor in Freshman Foods and Applied Nutrition. She was united in marriage to Dave Schoneweis on August 29, 1954, in the United Presbyterian Church at Americus, Kansas. Following Dave’s graduation from Veterinary School in 1956 they lived in Minneapolis, MN; Stillwater, OK; Lawrence, KS; returning to Manhattan in 1966. Bernice was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan where she was a member of numerous church ministries over the years. She and Dave sang together in choirs ever since meeting at church choir practice while attending K-State. An accomplished organist, she was the church organist for the Trinity Presbyterian Church, First Christian Church and the Westmoreland Methodist Church and was also the substitute organist for numerous local churches throughout the years. She loved to garden and participated in the Manhattan Community Garden where she formerly served on the board of directors and as president. She was active in Co-Vets Veterinary Wives group and the K-State Social Club, serving as chair of the Gourmet and International Foods interest group for many years. She loved trying new recipes and planning menus, introducing her family and friends to foods from around the world. She also had served on the board of directors for Riley County Extension. She is survived by her husband, David A. Schoneweis, DVM, of the home. Also surviving are their four children: Dwight Schoneweis (D.J.), Arlington, TX; Marlys Book (Chris), Choma, Zambia; Mark Schoneweis (Diana), Lawrence, KS; and Susan Schoneweis of Manhattan. She is also survived by one brother: Lloyd Brown (Betty), Americus, KS; and by six grandchildren: Dylan Schoneweis (Blaise), Trenton Schoneweis, Kendra Kenney (Brad), Trevor Book (April), Jayme Schoneweis, Andrew Schoneweis and one great grandson: John Book Kenney. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents and by one brother: Myron Brown. Graveside services will be held November 3, 2015, at the Americus Township Cemetery in Americus, Kansas.
