Ferguson of Holyoke died on October 16, 2001 in Holyoke at the age of 91. She was born on March 29, 1910 in Hebron, Nebraska to Walter F. Heimer and Blanche E. Roos Heimer. Bernice received her primary grade education in Hebron. At the age of 9, she moved with her family to Holyoke where she continued her education in the Holyoke public schools. She graduated from high school in 1927 at the age of 17. She immediately commenced post secondary education at the Colorado State Teaching College in Greeley, completing the teacher certification program. Prior to her marriage, she taught for eight years in various Phillips County country schools, including Prairie Gem, Pleasant Valley, Pleasant Prairie and Liberty School. Bernice enjoyed telling others that her husband knew a "good thing" and since it was during the depression, Bob let her keep teaching since she was the highest paid teacher in the county, at $85 a month! Bernice was baptized at the age of 10. Elizabeth Thompson, her life long friend, was baptized at the same time in the Christian Church in Holyoke. On June 7, 1936, Bernice Heimer was married to John Robert (Bob) Ferguson of the Wages Community. Two children were born to this union, Nancy and Lois. They made their home on a farm southwest of Holyoke. Bernice was very involved with her husband in their expanding farming and cattle operation for 38 years. A very tragic incident in her life happened in 1945, when their home was burned. Bernice suffered third degree burns and spent three months in the Holyoke Hospital. The joys of Bernice's life included her church, family, friends and especially her grandchildren, as well as entertaining friends and family in her home. No one ever left her place without having something to eat. Bernice lived a full active life, and even during her last few hours she had been entertaining friends in her home. Bernice P. Ferguson is preceded in death by her parents and by her husband of 38 years. She is survived by her two daughters Nancy Coleman of Holyoke and Lois Dillon and her husband Jim of Longmont; four grandchildren Zorn Coleman of Calumet City, Illinois, Wesley Dillon and his wife Kasey of Nashua, New Hampshire, Troy Dillon of Nashua, New Hampshire, Jalene Dillon Hoff and her husband Ryan of Stafford, Virginia; two brothers Glenn Heimer and his wife Irene and Harold Heimer and his wife Velva, all of Holyoke; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services for Bernice P. Ferguson were conducted on Saturday, October 20, 2001 at the First Christian Church of Holyoke with minister Jim Blake and minister Gerald Parriott officiating. Interment was made in the Holyoke Memorial Park.
