Description	:	Bernice R. Heffernan of Sioux City died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Sunrise Manor Retirement Community. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Revs. Paul-Louis Arts, James V. Kramper and Paul M. Albenesius officiating. There will be an honor guard provided by the American Legion Auxiliary of Jackson, Neb. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Calvary Cemetery, Emerson, Neb. Mrs. Heffernan was born in Hubbard, Neb., the daughter of A. George and Thora (Hansen) DeRoin. She was raised in the Hubbard area. She graduated from Emerson High School. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Morningside College in 1962 and received her master degree in education from Morningside College in 1969. She did additional graduate work at Kansas State University, the University of South Dakota, the University of Iowa and the University of Minnesota. She taught in Dakota County, Neb. She married John C. Heffernan on Feb. 18, 1947, in Jackson. The couple lived in Jackson. Her husband died Aug. 29, 1958, in Jackson. Following his death, the family moved to Sioux City. she taught both English and history for the Sioux City Community School System. She taught at Washington Elementary, East Junior High and East High School. She taught for 30 years, retiring in 1988. After her retirement, she taught as a substitute teacher at Western Iowa Tech Community College. She was a life member of the National Education Association and Sioux City Education Association. She was a former member of the Iowa State Education Association and a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Alpha Delta Gamma Sorority, where she was a former president. She was a former member of the Association of University of Women. She was a member of Floyd Golf Course Club, Golden Years Club of Morningside, Sioux City Women's Club and American Legion Auxiliary of Jackson. Survivors include two sons, Joseph B. of Lincoln, Neb., and Dr. John C. Heffernan and his wife, Karen, of West Des Moines; five grandchildren, Kim and Michael Heffernan of West Des Moines and Erik, Andrew and Katie Jean Peterson, all of Sioux City; a sister, Ruby Saunders of Sioux City; a special friend, Dick Wood of Sioux City; a son-in-law, Mark Peterson of Sioux City; and a sister-in-law, Leona Ringler of Texas. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Barbara Jean Peterson; and three brothers, Raymond Francisio, Henry DeRoin Hansen and Alfred DeRoin. ..Sioux City IA Journal 16 NOV 2001.
