McCollough, 76, of East Wenatchee, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was always full of grace, poise and dignity, passed away Nov. 20, 1997, at Central Washington Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Berniece McCollough was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Lamar, Colo., to George M. and Enid B. Hyde. She graduated from Centennial High School in Pueblo, Colo., in 1939. McCollough, 76, of East Wenatchee, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was always full of grace, poise and dignity, passed away Nov. 20, 1997, at Central Washington Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Berniece McCollough was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Lamar, Colo., to George M. and Enid B. Hyde. She graduated from Centennial High School in Pueblo, Colo., in 1939. While in high school and college she was a violinist in the symphony orchestra. She attended Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., where she majored in English. Berniece married Theron R. McCollough on Oct. 29, 1942, in the First Christian Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. As she began her new life with Theron, there also began a succession of moves through seven Western states. Theron was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation as a civil engineer for the construction of dams, power plants and irrigation works and this meant many adventures to come. Through the moves, Berniece was continually active with the children in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church, DeMolay and Mother Adviser in Rainbow Girls, where she was awarded the Grand Cross of Colors. The family hunted, fished and camped together in Colorado, Montana and Washington. Her whole life revolved around her family and she was truly both the heart and the soul of that family. Berniece was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wenatchee, the American Association of Retired Persons, Wenatchee Garden Club and the Astral Chapter No. 75 of the Order of Eastern Star. She had been a member of the Eastern Star for 50 years. Some of her greatest gifts of enjoyment were her husband, with whom she recently celebrated 55 years of marriage, her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling, the history of places that they've lived and visited, art, reading, oil painting, small bronzes, knitting and cross-stitch. Berniece was a wonderful wife, mother and Nana and will be greatly and sorrowfully missed by all those who deeply love her. She is survived by her husband, Theron R. (Mac); her son, Theron R. McCollough Jr. and wife Kathy and their two children, Theron R. III and Jessica, all of Spokane; her daughter, Martha White and her husband Gary and their two sons, Shawn and Ryan, all of Battle Ground, Wash.; a daughter-in-law, Gloria McCollough and her two daughters, Kelli and Katie, all of Royal City; and a sister-in-law, Jeane Oakes and her husband Dr. Richard Oakes, of East Wenatchee. Berniece was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Scott D. McCollough, who passed away on June 10th of this year. We will continue to love and miss her always. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
