Description	:	Son of John T. Patterson & Delilah Jackson Berry was 21 years of age when the Civil War began. He was enlisted in the Confederate Army on December 8, 1861 in Gibson County and served in the military in Franklin, TN by J. Y. Taylor. He was assigned as a Private to Company 8, commanded by Captain Gay, and was in the 47th Regiment Infantry, also the 12th Regiment Tennessee Infantry. Patterson & Delilah Jackson Berry was 21 years of age when the Civil War began. He was enlisted in the Confederate Army on December 8, 1861 in Gibson County and served in the military in Franklin, TN by J. Y. Taylor. He was assigned as a Private to Company 8, commanded by Captain Gay, and was in the 47th Regiment Infantry, also the 12th Regiment Tennessee Infantry. During much of the war, the 47th and 12th Regiments were combined with Col. William M. Watkins in command. These two Regiments were in Vaughn's Brigade, which served in the Division of Major General Benjamin Franklin Cheatham. This Division was a part of the Army commanded in the early part of the war by General Braxton Bragg and later by General John B. Hood. He was in the battles of Cheatham's division from Shiloh in April, 1862 to the battle of Franklin, TN on November 30, 1864. On November 23, 1863 the norther and western slopes of Lookout Mountain at Chattanooga were occupied by Cheatham.s Division. His Division was also on Missionary Ridge in the battle Chattanooga and was pushed off of Missionary Ridge by the Army of the Cumberland. He was with the Army of Tennessee when General Hood, in a calculated gamble led this army northward through Tennessee in late 1864 to attack the Army of the Cumberland, Commanded by General George H. Thomas, at Franklin and Nashville. The Battle of Franklin, Tenn. has been described as a fearful slaughter of men on both sides. Berry was wounded when enemy cannon balls struck some rocks causing several pieces of flying rock to strike him in the head. The rock particles were removed from his head by some friends, however Berry would remain crippled from these injuries for the remainder of his life. He was captured by Union Forces on November 30, 1864. As a prisoner of war, Berry was first taken to Nashville, TN where he was held as of Dec. 2, 1864. He was transferred to a Military Prison at Louisville, KY on December 3, 1864 and was immediately transferred from Louisville to Camp Douglas, IL, arriving there on December 5, 1864. Camp Douglas had a mortality rate reportedly ran as high as 10% per month. He was held there until March 23, 1865 when he was transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland for exchange. He arrived in Maryland on March 31, 1865, was paroled and released June 16, 1865 and was furnished transportation to Trenton, TN. [Union Prisoner of War Records reflect Berry T. Patterson, a private with Company B, 47th Regiment, TN Infantry (Confederate) was captured at Franklin, TN on November 30, 1864]. After the war, Berry returned to his home near Gadsden where he lived with his brother Kinch and sister Sack in Coxville Community, which became a part of Crockett County in 1872. Barry was never married. He and his brothers operated a corn mill and cotton gin in the Coxville community with power supplied by a team of 8 horses on a treadmill. Later, the gin was modernized with the installation of a steam engine. This is the Patterson Brothers Steam Corn Mill and Cotton Gin listed in Goodspeed's Early History of Crockett County, published in 1887.
