Jay, 82, of 310 W. Williams, a veteran Ottumwa barber, died at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Wapello County Home. He had been ill several months. Mr. Jay was a barber for 57 years, 30 years on Church Street. He retired 10 years ago. He was born July 25, 1878, in Decatur County, the son of Alvin and Minerva Slaughter Jay. He had lived in Ottumwa for 40 years. His marriage to Laura Brown took place May 19, 1916, in Oskaloosa. She survives. Besides his widow also surviving are two sons, O. Hunter Jay of Blakesburg Route 2 and J. Walter Jay of Ottumwa; two daughters, Mrs. Veronda Freshour and Mrs. Icye Jackson of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Dona [sic] Lane of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his first wife, a grandson, three brothers and a sister.
