Visitation will be held at the chapel on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Bert passed away October 5, 2014 near Eureka. Bertell William Martin was born on January 4, 1939 in Groton to Nels and Dorothy (Hoops) Martin. He attended Synaground School in West Hanson Township. He later enlisted in the National Guards and served for several years. Bert began farming south of Groton in 1962 and later purchased farm ground near Eureka. He was united in marriage with Charlotte Chesky on October 20, 2001. Bert enjoyed hunting, reading and visiting with family and friends. He was a foster parent for years and touched the lives of many children. Bert served as a 4-H leader for the handicapped 4-H club, allowing the kids to raise and show sheep, as well as, a Hunter safety instructor, teaching local youth the value of gun safety. He collected toy tractors and guns. Bert loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always had candy for them. He had a special bond with his grandson, Jason (Danielle) Pullan and their children, Cadence, Cameron, Caelynn and Colton. Grandpa, Pa, and Papa will be greatly missed. Celebrating his life is his wife, Charlotte of Groton, his daughters, Melodee Melder of Leesville, LA; Ann Sheridan of Groton; Susan (Anthony) Maestas of Cheyenne, Wyoming, two step-daughters, Rodeen (Al) Hermansen of Rapid City, Cory (Terry) Carlson of Mina, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his brother, John (Dodie) Martin of Groton. Preceding him in death were his parents, and sisters, Marilyn Dodge and Betty Mortenson. Honorary Urnbearers will be all of his friends in Eureka. - Paetnick-Garness Funeral Chapel
