Description	:	Bertha (Braase) Backhaus (1900 - 1979 ) Bertha Backhaus was born on November 23, 1900, near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Emma Brinkman Braase. She died on Saturday evening, January 13, 1979 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 78. Bertha was raised on a family farm south of Schleswig until 1911 when the family moved to a farm near Mitchell, South Dakota. Read More	Bertha (Braase) Backhaus (1900 - 1979 ) Bertha Backhaus was born on November 23, 1900, near Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Emma Brinkman Braase. She died on Saturday evening, January 13, 1979 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 78. Bertha was raised on a family farm south of Schleswig until 1911 when the family moved to a farm near Mitchell, South Dakota. On June 23, 1920, Bertha was united in marriage to Richard Backhaus at Mitchell. Together they made their home on a farm near Schleswig. In 1960, they retired and moved to Schleswig. Richard died in March of 1970. Since that time Bertha has continued to make her home in Schleswig until June of 1978 when she became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home, Denison, Iowa. Bertha was an active member of the United Church of Christ as well as a member of its Ladies Guild and Dorcas. In addition to her parents and her husband, Bertha was preceded in death by a son and a daughter in infancy, one brother Otto and a half sister Malinda. Survivors include, one son Freddie of Schleswig, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one sister, Edna, Mrs. Sam Weller of Mitchell, South Dakota. Also by a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 16, 1979, at 10:30 a. m., at the United Church of Christ, Schleswig. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Moore officiated at the services. Serving as pallbearers were Alvin Stockfleth, Emil Petersen, George Luetjens, Burdell Jensen, Henry Braase and Butch Munson.
