Description	:	Bertha C. Schmidt, a retired teacher, died Sunday (Dec. 4, 2005) from complications of Alzheimer's disease at Cedar Crest Manor Nursing Home in Washington, Mo. She was 99 and a former resident of Kirkwood. Mrs. Schmidt was born outside Truxton in Lincoln County, the daughter of Charles and Karolina Preul. She earned a bachelor's degree from the former Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton in 1929, and later, her master's degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia. Schmidt, a retired teacher, died Sunday (Dec. 4, 2005) from complications of Alzheimer's disease at Cedar Crest Manor Nursing Home in Washington, Mo. She was 99 and a former resident of Kirkwood. Mrs. Schmidt was born outside Truxton in Lincoln County, the daughter of Charles and Karolina Preul. She earned a bachelor's degree from the former Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton in 1929, and later, her master's degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia. Mrs. Schmidt taught English for more than four decades. Her early years of teaching in Missouri included classrooms in Wellsville, Leeton, Lincoln and Marshfield. From 1944 until her retirement in 1971, Mrs. Schmidt taught at Kirkwood High School. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 73 years, Missouri Teachers Association, Missouri Retired Teachers Association and Kirkwood United Methodist Church. Mrs. Schmidt was also a member the Choral Society of Kirkwood. She was an accomplished soloist who sang at many church and social functions. In 1972, she married Harold W. Schmidt. He died in 1994. Visitation is at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road in Kirkwood. Interment will be at Linn Cemetery in Wentzville. Among the survivors are her stepdaughter, Kay Hornsby of Victoria, Texas; and one stepgrandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to Kirkwood United Methodist Church, 201 West Adams Avenue, Kirkwood, Mo. 63122, or Unity Health Hospice, 1709 Heritage Hills, Washington, Mo. 63090.
