Edward Keller, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Bertha Frederika Schoenfeldt was born Dec. 8, 1878 in Pommern Province in Northeast Germany. At the age of four, she came to America with her parents and four sisters. They lived for a short time with her uncle, August Filter, and family in Norfolk. They, then, moved to a farm northwest of Creighton, where they lived in a one room sod house. Like all the other pioneers, they shared in the hardships of the droughts and grasshopper invasions of the 80s and the famous blizzard of 1888. She was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran Church in Germany. She was confirmed by the Rev. F. H. John, April 9, 1893 at Christ Lutheran Church at Bazile Mills. In 1931, she and her husband became members of Zion Lutheran Church in Creighton. As a young woman, she became a dressmaker. As the custom in those days, she went from home to home helping make clothing for the families. Sept. 22, 1904, she was united in marriage with William C. Hengstler. They lived in Meadow Grove, where their only son, Andrew William, was born. The following year, they moved to Battle Creek, where her husband and two brothers, Andrew and John, operated an implement business. In 1908, they moved to a farm south of Creighton. In 1916, they purchased the Roe Implement Shop in Creighton and in 1929 the Metteer Furniture and Funeral Home. Surviving are her son, A.W. Hengstler of Sun City, Ariz., two grandchildren, William Robert of Creighton and Roberta Urwiller of Colo., three grandsons and one sister, Mrs. Carl Suhr of Wausa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1951, three sisters, Mrs. Pete Wilson, Mrs. Fred Bessert and Mrs. James Jensen.
